Where should I retire in Mexico?

I want to live somewhere I can walk to stores, restaurants, etc. I love the beach but would be content being able to get there on days I want to, not necessarily having to live ON the beach or within walking distance. I would also consider living inland if the location grabbed me. I would prefer not to have to own a car, so public transportation would be great, or living close enough to stores that I rarely need it and then using a cab for trips farther away. Preferably I'd like access to all of the above.

I speak Spanish fairly well and would not want to be isolated from residents (not in a sea of expats) but having some expats around me would be nice, to help each other navigate living there, finding services, etc. Being within striking distance of a city appeals to me in order to be able to attend concerts, museums, etc.. I loved visiting Mexico City and would even consider living there, but I understand it's among the more expensive options. The only other places I've been in Mexico are Rosarito, Ensenada, San Jose Del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, and Tijuana, none of which grabbed me. Growing up in So. California, I think I've had enough desert living in my life.

I would recommend Puerto Vallarta. The place is fairly touristy but has everything.

Currently in Puerto Vallarta, and I would second it as a great location for an expat. If you want something smaller, there are several other locations nearby such as Bucerias.

Have you researched annual weather patterns in areas of interest? Once you move south of Matzatlan it goes from Dry Hot Summers to Hummid Hot Summers. Unless you move up into the mountains like Ajijic, Lake Chapala & San Miguel de Arrende all of which offer what your looking for with one exception. The Ocean would be a few hours away from Ajijic/Lake Chapala. Further if in SMA. All my exploration trips since the 80’s were spent in in PV & Matz. and as much as I enjoy the ocean I did not enjoy the Summer Heat.
