Stress of making a change to a new country

I'm wondering how stressful it is to make the actual move. Is it better to rent in various cities first before settling, or is that unnecessary?

The answer depends on your ability to adapt. Your level in the language will be a key factor. In some countries you can slip into a immigrant enclave and be surrounded by the familiar all day every day. Renting for a year or so may be a good idea, as I have seen a good number of people move back once the honeymoon period with the new country is over.

If you can 'visit' there for a decent length of time, that is points in your favor.
If you KNOW that you are going to be there for sure ? Get a basic command of the language. I did that for my Switzerland episode in the mainly German region.
