Hi

What a great move, coming to NZ. I am a little biased (born and raised in CHCH), but it is a beautiful city to live in.
We are a bit slower than the North Island, a lot more laid back.
There are so many wondeful things here. From the beautiful centre city (filled with trees and flowers -the garden city) to the outer areas you hardly need to go any distance to find the life style you are looking for. I hour to mountains for world famous ski feilds, 15 minutes to the beaches, 10 minutes to countryside (no matter where you are. There are wineries, a cafe' society, tonnes of malls.

The council was voted the best in New Zealand and one of the top in the world. It also has the lowest rates. There is always something free to do it you are a bit skint, flower festivals, free concerts, free firework shows, arranged walking events (and other things like this if you are sporty) Festival of romance, buskers festival, the list goes on. Summer is brilliant here.

It can get frosty in the winter, but it is nice to watch the change of seasons.

I have lived in a lot of cities around the world and have travelled a lot, and yes, Christchurch is one of the nicest places that I have been to. My hubby is an expat from Scotland and his brother is too. Both have decided this is one of the best places in the world to live in.

If you have any more specifc queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Well, I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but.. as a native Christchurcher who loves the place, even so, I'd have to say I'd be living in Hawkes Bay if it wasn't for all my family and friends being here. (My husband is American, hence my interest in this site). The Hawkes Bay region is beautiful, smaller towns than Chch, but mostly BETTER CLIMATE. Unless you like cold winters, and equivocal summers.
By the way, do you REALISE what we PAY nurses here in New Zealand????

hey, sorry for the late response, i couldnt logon to the site!

our time is coming up! i think sept 1.

turns out that we have less control than i thought. it just depends on whose willing to offer the right job.

thanks for the input. I do think we will end up somewhere smaller. maybe less than 100,000 people

p.s. yeah, I do realize the pay issue. there is no escaping that-- hard to understand considering how desperate in general nz is for nurses. none the less, we really want to be down there, see the country, meet the people, drink the beer, and be the ones with accents! so here we come.

i have found a job! the pay is going to be comparable to the US, only in NZD, which is worth 50 US cents! we should be able to live comfortably in NZ on this wage, however. moving to Gisborne in september. everything is set. looking for contacts!!

Hi!
I am a nurse (intensive care) intending to move to NZ in Jan 04 with husband and sons. How is Gisborne? Are you enjoying nursing in NZ? Are you able to enjoy a modest standard of living on your nurses wages?

Did you use an agency to obtain your jobs or did you arrange it all yourselves?

My husband and I are coming over for 3 weeks in Nov 03 to look around and set up interviews for us -mine in nursing and his in tree surgery. We thought Wellington sounded lovely but Christchurch and Hawkes Bay sound great too. The whole place appeals!!!

Please let me know how you find nursing out there? My e-mail address is chris@conlan1309.freeserve.co.uk for a personal reply to any of the questions. Thanks.

Did you end up in Gisborne? I would like to ask you some questions about it -- was there in Oct/Nov 2003.
