Do I need a residence permit?

New Topic Newest First

Hi,
I am a British citizen currently living in Norway. I came to Norway in November 2016 and after 3 months here I registered as a job seeker with the Politi. (On the 31st January.)
I am being told by Norwegians that this job seekers registration allows me to stay for 6 months. But when does this start? Does it start when I registered or when I entered the country? The Politi were very unclear when I registered and I received no documentation to help me, just a number.
So I am unsure if I can stay in Norway for another 3 months (from January) only, or another 6.
If I can only stay another 3, what is the next step to staying longer?
Do I need to apply for a residence permit?
Please help, thankyou!

If you leave Norway every three months you don't need a residence permit but if you want to be registered as living in Norway or receive benefits for your taxes or be a member of the Norwegian national insurance scheme you need a residence permit. Having a residence permit does not not mean you are registered as living in Norway. You will pay trygdeavgift but get no benefits or pension. Some employers exploit this as will the Norwegian state. You very quickly become tax liable to Norway but are refused benefits when Norway claims the part of you living in Norway that needs benefits lives elsewhere.
