Norway Reunificatoion

Hi everyone! This is my first post, and I believe the great brains on have valuable input.

My situation in a nutshell: I am an American woman engaged to a Norwegian man, both in our 40s. My (simple and amicable) American divorce will be final in April 2018 and we had planned to marry here in San Francisco in May.

I'm a bureaucrat myself (ducking the flying tomatoes!) so I respect rules and processes, but a few things are a little unclear.

It seems that if we marry in San Francisco and then he returns back to Norway and I submit my application from here, we are in limbo until UDI does their thing (3-7 months). I am a whiz at paperwork so I'm not worried about a subpar application.

This 3-7 months thing - at best - is difficult, because I need to sell my home, give my workplace notice, train a replacement, etc., and that's all tough to do when one doesn't know when one is leaving.

In doing research, it does seem possible for me to go to Norway to live with my husband and go through the process there. I understand that I will not be able to leave Norway during that time. My question is, if this is truly possible, do I just enter on a 90-day tourist visa and then we immediately go submit our application? On Day 91 of my stay, it sounds like as long as I have all the correct documentation submitted to UDI will still be legally permitted to live in Norway whilst the process takes place.

Honestly I would rather sell my house, leave work, and get started on learning the language, adjusting, the new way of life, etc., from inside Norway rather than sitting here in California.

One more question; if we marry and have a pending family reunification application (submitted in the US) in process, I can still go visit for a few weeks without a problem, yes?

Sorry for all the questions. Thank you; I so appreciate all your feedback.

Sol :)

Hi again, just reread your first post at the very end, so just to clarify…. If you file from the US, you are not allowed to enter Norway at all until you have been approved, same if you apply here, you cannot leave during the process. So you may want to rethink your fears of coming here to apply, just saying. ;) This is something they are rather strict about, and if you enter during process it will automatically cancel out your application. Please check your PM's here as I will send you my FB info so that we can chat on messenger, much easier back and forth. Good luck and hope to hear back from you soon.

Nothing to be nervous about at all. You simply come on a 90 day visa and wait until at least 70 days have passed and then apply and you will stay during process. Just make sure you have all documentation required, and fill everything out correctly. The process goes so much faster when inside Norway. Again don't feel nervous, it will be so worth it all in the end. Did you not marry in May as planned? Oh and call me Terry, did you not see the PM?

Hi Tazz! How funny, my best girlfriend in Norway lives in Kongsvinger! I would love to meet up sometime. I'm a bit too nervous about just getting married and coming over without having a permit first, so I think we're going to wait and do a finacee permit, though it's very tough to wait. If you (or anyone reading this!) can recommend a good attorney inside Norway, I'd be very grateful. In the US we have so many immigration attorneys but only for folks trying to get in, not move away! :D I would love to stay in contract and find out about your transition and acculturation process!
