Karachi is a really happening place... I have been there a couple of times. You just need to get into the right circle... Crime is there but thats the case with any suburban city... Normal precautions such as not going out alone late at night, no flashy jewelry etc should help.... You should google karachi and pakistan and it will give you a good idea....

Karachi should not be a problem provided you follow a few rules: 1. Do not use public transport 2. Get to know the good areas from the bad ones 3. DO NOT use your mobile while outside (ie on the road) eg at traffic signals 4. No not flash expensive jewellry 5. Just take it a bit easy/be a bit patient at the start (1-2 months), you might find the life's pace a bit slow if you are coming from NY.
Have fun in karachi.

I am curious if you made the move to Pakistan and if so, how you like it. I'm an American, female designer who was just contacted about a possible job in Karachi. I'd appreciate hearing about your experience there. Thanks!
