Coronavirus News - October 2021

There were three deaths and 252 new covid cases on the last day of September as the number of patients in the ICU continues to fall.

Nationwide there are 255 hospitalized patients of which 201 are in the ward and 54 are in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) announced Thursday, that the provinces of Veraguas, Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos, and the Ngäbe Buglé region, have not had any patients with Covid-19 admitted to the ICU.

Since the pandemic began in Panama, in March 2020, it is the first time that Doctor Luis “Chicho” Fábrega, in the city of Santiago, has not had covid patients in the ICU.

The Expanded Program on Immunization reported that 5,501,067 vaccines against Covid-19 have been applied in the country and that is over 70% of the population.

President Laurentino Cortizo announced on Friday October 1st that he will approve the recommendation to apply a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to all those over 55 years of age and over. He said that the "vaccine experts" recommended the application of the booster dose for immunosuppressed people, health personnel and for all those over 55 years of age.

Renowned infectologist and pediatrician Xavier Sáez Llorens, an advisor to the government during the first covid-19 wave has been threatened with physical violence if the anti-covid vaccination for children is approved. However, he said that the threats will not silence him. Because a percentage of adults do not want to be vaccinated, Dr. Sáez Llorens has stated that they will have to resort to vaccinating children under twelve years of age in order to reach 85%-90% herd immunity, which is necessary to control the pandemic.

New York City decided over the summer that it would require all school staffers to be vaccinated or face losing their jobs. The Biden administration thinks U.S. service members who refuse to comply with the military's COVID-19 vaccine mandate should be subjected to the potential of a dishonorable discharge. At Penn State University, 117 unvaccinated students have been placed on interim suspension for failure to comply with the university’s weekly COVID-19 testing requirement. Students on interim suspension may not participate in classes, in-person or remotely; are not allowed on university property; and may not attend any Penn State-sponsored events, programs, and activities, including football games.

A personal finance guru who rallied against taking the coronavirus vaccine has died from Covid, hours after being placed on a ventilator. Alan Steel, 74, died after a month-long battle with the virus. Mr. Steel regularly posted to Twitter about why people should not take the Covid vaccine, and why neither masks nor lockdowns were needed. In a somber message posted, he told followers: “You may wonder why I’ve been so quiet. For the best part of two weeks, I fought a losing battle with Covid. “Been on oxygen in hospital since. Moving to intensive care today. This is one nasty illness. Fingers crossed I make it through.” He didn’t.

An Oregon doctor who falsely claimed that wearing masks can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning has had his license revoked. Steven Arthur LaTulippe is no longer allowed to practice, according to records from the Oregon Medical Board. LaTulippe also received a $10,000 fine. An investigation conducted by the Oregon Medical Board found that LaTulippe engaged in "8 instances of unprofessional or dishonorable conduct, 22 instances of negligence in the practice of medicine, and 5 instances of gross negligence in the practice of medicine."
