Should have my Pensionado visa in hand next week.
I need to travel back to US for about 6 months.
Trying to find out the limit for how long I can stay outside Panama with a Pensionado visa.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi, You have not applied for a visa, as a pensionado you get Permanent reisdence, therefore you can come and go as you like, no restrictions.

I thought you could only stay out of the country for a maximum of two years without coming back.

Agree with Fred here. You can stay away for 2 years, but must come back for at least a few days.

If you have a permanent residency then you have to come back minimum once within the time frame of two years

Thanks Fred, Randle, et al.,
Thanks for the confirmations; I’ve come to trust information from most of the core regulars.
I’ve a few medical appointments and wrapping up of some business matter so it’s good know of the flexibility.
Britpilot, As of this moment, I are correct; I do not yet have my residency card.
Unless an unforeseen event arises, I will have late next week.
Fred, Hope you all are settling in nicely in Chiriqui. I think you flew down about the same time I did last April.
Thanks again.

We are loving our life in Chiriqui. We are happy, and really have no desire to go back to the US.
As for the time outside Panama, remember that things can change quickly here. Keep an eye on the forum.

Fred -- You are correct. A two year absence will negate your status as a resident, regardless if what type you have qualified for.

One can say that lately they've been a bit 'lenient' in the application of it, given all the travel restrictions that were imposed since beginning of 2020. Some local lawyers were able to 'preserve' the case of their clients that were 'border line'. But nobody should take it for granted. Although a good case making a demonstration that can be considered 'force majeure' will certainly be find some flexibility. The rule is there to avoid abuse, not as a tool to abuse.

Longshadow, If you are still in tge process of residency application and do not have a permanent residency you are supposed to stay in Panama until your residency is approved however you can get an authorization stamped in your passport and pay another fee. This is good for 1 year or until your permanent residency is approved. Once you have your permanent residency the 2 years applues. Best to check with your lawyer to be sure which applies. Your question was a bit vague.

There are 2 status for Pensionado visas. Temporary residency and permanent residency. The 2 years applies to perm. residency and 1 year to temp. residency with special travel authorization.
