Retire Bagiuo Question

New Topic Newest First

Yes, I know this topic is pounded here, but I am planning on retiring in 2 years, 56 years old. My wife of 30 years is filipina but has only been back to the country 4 times since we were married. She has been us citizen for 28 years. My question is, and I appreciate any and all advice, what are the drawbacks to living in Bagiuo? I know the road in and out is bad, but it doesnt seem many expats stay in Baguio, and I was wondering if that is accurate and why. I have about 2100 per month income and more once we reach ss age. As I stated, any suggestions I am grateful and open to listening. Subic, Bagiuo, Anywhere you guys reccommend we start looking. Going in Feb to scout and prepare. Her family location and issues are of no concern, great situation. Thanks fir any advice. I have Tricare for medical and health wise she has managed high blood pressure with meds, otherwise healthy couple. Looking for cooler weather, relaxed living, and we plan to rent for a couple of years to make sure its what we want. Willing to pack up and try different locations acrross country. Thanks

Surfingcebu,
Thanks for advice. She is from Tarlac, a few relatives still live there so we was gonna check it out, but she says to hot for my liking. Crowded Bagiuo is ok I guess until I get tired of it.....as far as 6 month each, we have discussed it but a lot of questions we just dont know the answers to. For me, I could get rid of everything, sell my house and bank money, pack 1 suitcase and go live around Philippines. But her, no, she cherishes the security we now have built up.

Punch - do the 4 months in , 6 months out until your use to it .
Mabe the balance is 6 months in each country .

Tarlac is a real experience - hardly and 'Kenos' …great people there . I have many friends in Tarlac, Comillas , LaPaz - love it there BUT it is darn hot in the summer !
Home is Negros for me in the mountains/ volcanoes at 4000' altitude :)

Thank you. I have been considering tagaytay as well, the volcano close by is kinda putting it near the bottom of the list. Everywhere has pros and cons of course.......
Thanks again for the suggestion

Taal Vol don't seem to be a big deal to the long time locals. In fact they just laugh. Tagaytay is nice and if the threat of the Vol keeps a few more from finding their way here so be it. You need to take a look. Bebo

Thanks. We will check it out. I consider myself wise enough to not laugh at a volcano nor live near one knowing there is little chance of evacuation with the roads and transportation in place.

I have a New York City state of mind. When overcrowded, is that vehicle? Bumping in to one another (we don't have that even in NYC), not enough burger/restaurants. Can you enlighten, briefly what overcrowded means from your perspective? Dennis Tedder

We bought a house in Baguio. Lived there a year and sold it. The city is miserable. Tagaytay is a better choice. Even weekends here are far better than Baguio.

try CDO, Cagayan De Oro, I lived there for 4 yrs very cheaply until i had a stroke, 2010-2014, i am now recovered and as soon as i sell my house i live in near St Louis, i will be returning there ! It is a great area with new shopping malls many big grocery stores, and plenty of public transportation if you do not have your own vehicle !

Taguytay is amazing. You can not go wrong with Tagaytay. Great rental market now. Furnished 1bedroom condo for $325. Always 10 to 12 degrees cooler. Easy to get around. 1 1/2 to 2 hours to Manila. Great medical and dentist. Bebo

Have visited Baguio many many times, lovely place to visit, but to live there? Not for me, constant traffic jams, very wet, if you want a day at a beach you have to drive down that bloody mountain, Lennon road is the quickest but so dangerous, vans and buses drive like total idiots. Also Kennon road is constantly being repaired, a very large part of the road collapsed earlier this year, not sure if it's open again, it wasn't when I went there last. You can use Marcos highway, not so dangerous.
Tagaytay has a lot going for it, it's cool, clean, safe, great shopping restaurants over looking lake Taal, it has shown some signs of activity but not dangerously I think. Just outside Tagaytay is cheaper housing but still cool. Baguio or Tagaytay? Tagaytay hands down.
Clark Freeport is an up and coming area, but hot, Subic, I like a lot, but it is hot. Really you have to experience it yourself everywhere has fors and againsts it's up to you to decide. Remoteness of the provinces, town or city life.
Remote areas are more likely to have porridge cuts some not even running water, maybe long trip to decent shopping. I found the provinces too boring, and a lack of English spoken. We now live outside a big town quiet here but near enough to restaurants etc. You will have to see for yourself and decide

Landslides are a threat in Baguio during the wet season. A slide blocked a road in our subdivision. We had two accidents in one year, neither our fault. The public market, once a jewel, is now a filthy, congested dump. Water is also a weekly problem. I lived there thirty years ago. So beautiful then.

Thanks for advice. I am not a fan of elbow to elbow and waiting in lines, but somewhere between there and desertion are desireable.
