Is anybody retired and/or living on a Philippine island? What do you like/hate about it?

Are you surprised it's not on this list:
12 Best Islands for Retirement

Perhaps depending of Phils have 7000 islands :)

E g there are many Germans in and around Dumaguete.
There are many retired Americans in Phils. I don't know if they have any special favorite place, I believe spread "all over".
A few years ago there were PLANNS to start a "Retirement Paradice" north of Bacolod, with "everything" for retired when in bad shape too, having own doctors. Expected to be much cheaper caretaking in USA, so they expected to attract many Americans needing caretaking. One of them behind it is a Fil-Am I knew a litle bit. I don't know if it happened.

Ron,
Not surprised at all. Travel & Leisure serves a clientele that tends to stay away from 3rd world countries. I've been to Malta, Barbados, and the San Juan Islands in Washington State and they are all pretty expensive. I can imagine the list that CondeNast Traveller would come up with. I subscribed to a publication called International Living about 25 years ago that was recommending Belize, Costa Rica and some other Caribbean locations. Great advice 25 years ago, and although not islands geographically, you could have gotten in very cheaply. On the many lists on websites of great islands to retire, I have seen Palawan several times. I think people who retire in the Philippines have a specific lure, It could be you have a Filipino wife and after being here many times on vacation, you realize what a good place it would be to retire. You may have come to dive in one of the great diving sites here and decided later to try it for retirement.. The familiarity with the English language is also a big draw. The beauty and kindness of the Filipino people though has to be the number one reason. I don't think people who have never been here would say "I want to retire on an island, how about the Philippines". 75% of the people I know, and I know many, do a 6 month here, 6 months in their home country. A smaller percentage stay 8 months and go home during rainy season June-Sept.
A very small percentage are full time residents. Just my thoughts.

RON.......that is exactly why ANGELES. POMPANGA and SUBIC are basically retired military that were stationed there and the came back. Many have Filipina wives.

As I have stated many times, the RP is not for everyone there are alot of things a person must get used to and the list is long.
Maybe that is why so many EXPATS stay here 6/6.......!
