My mother-in-law is very sick (diabetes with a kidney infection). She's in the ICU in Tacloban. I have no idea what the outcome will be. The cost of flying to the Philippines right now is ridiculous. We have no choice. The question is, apparently my 9 year old son now needs needs a visa? They will be staying for 20 days. Anyone who knows anything pertinent please let me know asap before I pay for these ticket in the next 48 hours.

Yes, everyone needs a visa now and all international arrivals were shutdown yesterday by D30 in response to India covid.

Best of luck.

I believe the government has suspended the entry of all foreign nationals through April 30 with the limit of international passengers of 1500 per day.

ACE: I am not sure if this will help you, but take a look at it. It is a article that just came out today about foreigners entering the Philippines.

It seems now in order to get a visa for a foreigner to enter the Philippines you have to go through the same procedure as a Filipino trying to get a visa to the U.S. of course not the same time line but they are requiring financial documents, bank statements, tax returns, etc....

I can't tell my wife not to go, I also would be surprised if she went without my son. They are very close. Mother is getting worse, septic shock. Decisions must be made soon. These are really crazy times especially for expats and the Philippines.

I tried but I can't find that article.

So what I was able to find out is you have to mail documents to the Philippines Consulate and they will supposedly return your Visa within 1-2 weeks but they require a list of things including bank statements, tax returns, etc.... You can't call them because no one will answer.

New regulations starting today my son doesn't need a visa travelling with his mother. Crazy the change from one day to the next....

I have been continuing this topic because I think the experience and information will definitely be helpful to others. My wife is the eldest in the family and only daughter. it is extremely important for her to be there for and with her mother regardless of what the cost may be. If you guys have Filipina girlfriend or wives and don't understand that, your are in for a difficult relationship. Something like this is one of those things that will never be forgotten for a Filipina with a standard family.
The good news is we have gotten her (mother-in-law) moved to another hospital in Tacloban where she is in intensive care and getting better attention. I believe she is in septic shock for the short or long term prognosis is not good.

Regulations changed on May 1st, so my son doesn't need a visa anymore. All other foreigner tourist will need a visa once they are allowed to enter the Philippines even for a day. If you are with your Filipina wife you can enter the Philippines but it's extremely hard to find a flight. I was able to get a flight for my wife and son for May 15 from Taipei to Cebu. Quarantine in Clark and Manila is very difficult and time consuming plus you must pay the 4,000 pesos for the Covid test. Quarantine time 7 days minimal. Cebu there is no charge for the Covid test and quarantine if negative is only 1-3 days. In Cebu the Covid test is done in the airport with quicker results.

Ace,

I hope things go well, and I'll be praying for you and your family.

I am inwardly cringing in empathy as I envision all of the logistical issues that can arise.

In the end, you have to do what you must do for marital peace and harmony. You are the expert on your relationship.

The one insight I will offer is: There is not always a solution to every problem. It's possible to orchestrate a situation where we only have choices on how to proceed.

In the worst case scenerio, consider how you can potentially fund a 3-12 month stay if your wife and child are unable to return... and how you can maintain the household in your country without her contributions.

As a partner, most of the logistics will fall on you... and you may need to go into a financial hibernation/survival mode -- focused on cutting your budget to the bone and focusing on minimal payments to preserve cash.

Be cautious of tapping into credit except as a last reserve, because it is almost certain that contingencies will arise.

My heart seriously hurts for both of you, and I can appreciate the agony of wanting to "let your wife go to the side of her parent" vs "concerns about the logistics of international travel and return".

You can't put a price on minimizing regrets by trying everything humanly possible.

There are no good answers... Only choices. And, those choices will lead to more situations with other limited choices.

I wish you the best as you navigate that maze. My thoughts are with you.

Agonizing along with you,
-Asawa

Asawa,
Of course everything you mentioned has been considered and is already understood. I appreciate your concerns. The biggest obstacle I foresee is if she will need dialysis. That could cost a small fortune in the Philippines. We'll cross that bridge when we get there. We have a strong relationship, we'll do whatever we can. I'm the youngest in my family, both parents deceased and several siblings whom I were very close to also gone. Her family is my only family and they are very good people, everyone of them. I'm glad we are here to help.

Mother-In-Law still in ICU. My wife and son are flying to Cebu on May 15. My son needs to apply for a new passport (children under 16 actually cannot renew their passport, they must apply for a new one). The catch is to get a passport it would take 4-6 weeks. You can get an emergency passport if you have the required documents (ticket and letter in English of the emergency) and you apply for it within 72 hours of the departure date and are able to get an appointment at Passport Agency before the flight departs...... Catch 22. We'll see what happens next week.....
