Hi Everyone, We are retired Canadian citizens and wish to move to a warmer climate. Can anyone offer a simple step by step process to get the wheels in motion. I have tried to speak to the Portuguese consulate in both Ottawa and Toronto (no one returns calls or picks up) and I have emailed both and the emails bounce back (equally as strange) So we are looking for some relocate and retire 101! We look forward to any and all advice sent our way Regards Donna & Roger PS I am a dual citizen, UK, if that helps at all. Cheers!

Hi Donna & Roger, I was surprised to read your post it seems we are in a very similar situation. My wife and I are currently in Canada and also looking to move to Portugal this year. We have current UK and Canadian passports and plan to travel to Portugal on our Brit passports as EU citizens. What happens with Brexit? Who knows, but we will cross that bridge if the need arises. Our house will go up for sale in April and we plan to ship just our very personal belongings. Getting quotes for shipping has been interesting. the responses from moving companies range from being ignored to excellent. I can give you names of the worst and the best if you message me. I did not get a response from the Portuguese Consulate either when I asked a question. For property rentals I found Idealista a pretty good place to look ..... www.idealista.pt/arrendar-casas/leiria-distrito/pagina-2
If anyone in and around Caldas Da Rainha has leads or contacts for longer term rentals (furnished with min 2 bed and 2 bath) I would appreciate the information. We are both world travelers (lived in 4 continents and 6 countries) so a move to Portugal is more exciting than daunting. Looking forward to a snow free winter next year :) Jim

The process to move to Portugal has been covered extensively on this forum ad nauseam. Try looking in the archive of older posts, it might be helpful.

Thanks for your comment, but just about all posts deal with US or EU citizens - are there any Canadians here who have experience with the application process?

to 'RobertEaston' re: the visa process for Canadians. Canadians are 'third country nationals', just as Australians, Americans, Chinese, etc are. So just follow the processes here for Americans and it's the same for the Visa process.

To the people simply posting "just look around" and "this has been answered already", I have some simple advice: keep scrolling. Don't waste your precious time commenting on things clearly not worth your time. OP - I dont know how different the process is for Canadians (or UK citizens) but this is where I got most of my information when creating my project. There are also many comments at the bottom of the page. https://www.expatexchange.com/ctryguide/4216/92/Portugal/United-States-Citizens-Moving-to-Portugal-Demystifying-the-Paper-Trail
Lastly, here is a link to my project (still in progress). Good luck. https://www.expatexchange.com/expatguide/278/3434530/Portugal/Expats-Living-in-Portugal/Portugal-ResidencyCitizenship-Gantt

To Fajoaqu. The link you referenced was created by craigandmicki and has been referenced numerous times in this forum. Thus, advising people to do a search of the forum is indeed helpful as there are many useful threads here.

Thanks for your reply - I understand that - I was just asking about specific "Canadian Embassy" experiences (the same way as many Americans are asking/posting about San Francisco vs.other cities). The original poster commented on 'no responses' from 2 different cities and there is another post about wrong information from the Vancouver Embassy regarding the Schengen Visa. Also, some of the posts are several years old and regulations do change. Thanks again to all who gave advise.
