Hi- I am traveling to Portugal in 2019 to explore areas to retire in from the United States. I welcome any suggestions as to areas for a single person and perspectives on moving to Portugal solo. I would also love to develop friendships and mentors that I can meet when I am there next year. My best, L.

Hi Leo - If you haven't visited, you should before you start asking. While it's a "western" country, the culture is quite different. (For example, if you find yourself angry after waiting two hours at the DMV, you will end up having a stroke here.) The language is dense and can be impenetrable. Although a fair number of people speak English, many people, people who may be important to you, don't. etc etc. We made three extended trips over five years before deciding to move here, it wasn't about "popular," it was about how our lifestyle fit in. So I'd recommend taking some time and not making any decisions without spending several weeks (away from the tourist areas) here.

Many people have gotten their Visas and Permits at no additional cost (other than the common fees) by using articles here, on the Portugal Forum. See "US Citizens Moving to Portugal", "Getting Your First Visa" and so on at this site! Paying 200 to 4000 dollars for third party help is not necessary, and often more of a risk.

leortiz1 I agree with you. People's responses should be given publicly so that everyone can learn. Unless you want to give your email, adress or phone number. Thanks.

@realspear > The language is dense and can be impenetrable.
Agreed. During my first visit, I described the language as Swooshing Russian. Before the 3rd trip I learned 50 words. More importantly I learned how to pronounce Portuguese phonemes (perceptually distinct units of sound). I may have not understood a word of overheard conversations, but I recognized many phonemes - at least when they were speaking slow enough. It's a start.
