After residency permit > required # of days in country?

We were wondering if, after receiving the initial residency permit, there is a required number of days that we must be Portugal for in order to qualify for the renewal?

By 'initial residency permit' do you mean a temporary resident permit? With a resident permit you're allowed to be out of Portugal 6 consecutive months or 8 months interpolated, within the total period of validity of the authorization, i.e. within 1 year for a temporary permit, 2 years otherwise.

Exceptions allowing longer absences are made for specific reasons.

You can find the law (chrome browser translates) in Article 80 of Lei de Estrangeiros (Law of Foreigners)

To 'ahaserendipity' question about time required to be in Portugal to be eligible to renew your permit: Yes, there is a requirement that you are not absent more than 6 months during the validity of your permit, without prior approval by SEF (given for unusual circumstances).

Oops. I made a mistake in my post above

It's Article 85 that says (via google translate) "six consecutive months or eight months interpolated, within the total period of validity of the authorization"
