Travel within Europe with Expired Portuguese Student Visa

Hello -

I know this post is similar to others in this forum, but I have some specifics that I'm a bit confused about. In reading this post about re-entry, I know that it shouldn't be a problem to re-enter the country after my student visa has expired, as long as I have not exhausted my entry/exits (I haven't left the country since I arrived) and I have a letter from SEF confirming my appointment to apply for a residence card (this can be just the email confirmation, correct?): https://www.expatexchange.com/expatguide/278/3436366/Portugal/Expats-Living-in-Portugal/Re-entry-with-SEF-appointment

My question is if I can legally travel throughout Europe between the time of my visa expiration and receiving my residence card. An important note is that I have not yet had my appointment either, so I have not "officially applied" for the card - not sure if that matters. As a US passport-holder, can I travel throughout the other Schengen countries with an expired Portuguese visa. I know it would not have been an issue if I hadn't entered the country with a student visa because it would be just like I'm on a tourist visa, but now that I've been here since December I'm not sure.

Any advice welcome.

Thank you,

Kath
