I just... arrived in Portugal and I got Google Voice before we left USA, I ported my USA number in Google Voice and now I got the new Portuguese phone service so I can forwarding the calls to the new phone number, but when I trying to link with the new number Google is not accepting it (because it's not an American Phone#?) Has anybody had this problem before? Please Help.
Thanks.

Do you have a smartphone? Assuming your goal is to make and receive calls on your smartphone with your Google Voice number while in Portugal:

Install Google Voice and Google Hangouts apps on your smartphone. That way you do not forward the calls, rather answer them directly.

You should be able to make and receive calls from Google Hangouts.

You should be able to receive calls, texts, and voice messages in the google voice app. You may need to make outgoing calls using google hangouts in Europe, I read somewhere that the Google voice app does not allow outgoing calls outside of the US.

Also, you can also do inbound/outbound calling from your computer browser if you sign into google voice.

Hope this helps.

google hangouts is no longer needed. Google voice was update to a full blown VoIP platform about 6 weeks ago. No need to forward the number to your Portuguese number either. It rings in google voice app and you use the google voice app to make calls, texts, etc.

Wallvestor: You should do a YouTube video about how to do this and what is actually needed. Based on the volume of posts here and the amount of misinformation, you'd be a life-saver.

Craigandmicki I shall consider such, but I suspect it could all change and be obsolete in short order. And, if folks that have ported over their U.S numbers follow my instructions of earlier, it'll work just fine. It's really very easy.
And, thanks :)

Thank you Walvrster.. That is awesome news! I will enjoy not having to use a third app.

One question: we have Vodafone you and it includes a free chat Data option. I know that hangouts is one of the free data applications supported, do you know if GoogleVoice will also use the free chat data?

By the way I would appreciate any advice on cell phone and or Internet plans or a pointer to elsewhere on the forum to find this.

Microbrain, yeah I see chat pass including many other social media/communication apps on their website. I see hangouts (which is old tech.), Google Voice is there, Skype, Facetime, Imessenger....and others. It appears to be when you use those apps, your data stash is not dinged. A free offer from Vodafone. Which is the carrier we use. So, you're good to go if you follow my instructions regarding choosing "skip" when prompted to enter a phone number to forward GV to.
