Hello.
We've been sorting through a variety of topics as we plan for our move to Portugal One little topic has arisen recently: Will our North American BBQ work with propane tanks in Portugal or will we need to buy a new BBQ in Portugal? How compatible is the BBQ-propane connection. Is it standardized as they are in North America?
Thanks, Steven

Nope, Europe is not compatable with the USA - neither the propane nor electrical connectors, nor the voltages.. many other differences too, but at least Europe drives on the RH side of the road. BUT traffic signs and regulations vary too (as compared to the USA).

Just buy another hose and connector for your BBQ when you arrive in Portugal. There also may be an issue with meeting codes with your USA BBQ if you need servicing or parts. Our gas-fueled Maytag clothes dryer did not meet Canadian code when we moved back to Canada. Neither did the propane tank and hoses and connectors of our propane-fueled car when I came back to Canada with it and needed servicing in Canada.

This may help.
I looked at bbqs a few months ago. None came with a regulator or hose. I bought a new one and asked the salesman where to get the regulator that would match up with the burner. He's like any gas station. Ooooook....
To make a long story short, I eventually found out you have to buy the regulator at your favorite gas supplier retail store. I often buy Galp gasoline as we get a discount for shopping at Continente. So, I went to the Galp retail store where they have a choice of either butane or propane regulators. Your choice. I chose propane as they say it's what most folks use for such applications, (I think butane burns cleaner). The regulator is labeled with a pressure value that matches the sticker that is on my new bbq and in the instructions. It is as follows: butane (363g/h) (G30) and for propane (357g/h) (G31). These are values for France, UK, Spain, Italy and PT. So, if you choose butane the regulator will be a G30 which produces 28-30 mbar of pressure. If you choose propane you will use a G31 regulator which produces 30 mbar of pressure.
Once I purchased the regulator a meter long piece of hose was added, along with 2 hose clamps to attach the hose to the bbq and the other end to the regulator.
Now, off to find the fuel. I went to a BP gas station, but they were quick to inform me that my regulator would only accept a tank from Galp. OK, now I get it....no biggie Galps are all over the place. I purchase the tank (twice the size we use in the U.S.) hook it all up and voila', a bbq.
Now, with all that being said, I would convert mbar to psi, then ascertain the psi my US bbq wants and make a judgement call. If you find it acceptable, then perhaps you can purchase the hose and regulator here and just attach same to your US bbq by cutting the hose and splicing it to the new hose.
The thing that struck me was that the burner in the new bbq would use either propane or butane. When I purchased a US gas dryer years ago, I had the choice of either a propane or a butane burner. The impression I got was that the two gasses burned differently, and that a different burner was required. Here, that doesn't seem to be the case, at least with bbqs.

Hi Mac,
Thanks for your response. Very helpful. That is kind of what I thought the response would be. However, are there propane connector adaptors one can get to accommodate the differences between European and North American propane connections?
thanks in advance,
Steve

Thanks Wallvestor,
This is an abundance of detailed information which is what I was hoping for! So, thank you! I'm going to see how easy it is to detach the hose/regulator from my current BBQ and then do as you instruct in your response. That seems to be the best approach! Will be saving this for when we eventually get there! Can't wait!

Don't fritz around with an adapter. Choose the tank you need and get a proper connection for it and a proper hose. Oh, and gont go cheap. Go good. Propane/butane is explosive if a hose and connection leaks - but YOU know that.
Just a reminder that safety is FIRST. After all you want to enjoy your BBQ meals in Portugal, eh?

Hi Mac,
I assume that there are places that can made the conversion in Portugal? I'd rather someone who knows what they're doing to make the change rather than me...
thanks for this - and the reminder!
