Rental requirment for initial visa application at DC consulate

I am still in the US and am speaking to a realtor in Tavira who tells me her latest client told her they had to do an initial lease at the time of their visa application of 6 months. I don't know what location they went through. Can anyone tell me with some certainty do I need to sign a lease for 3 months, 6 months before I apply for my visa through the Washington DC consulate? I have looked on the consulate web site and all I can find is the statement that I need to have housing secured but not for how long.

Thanks for your input!

To 'framar2': You seem to have reached a great realtor! YES, for the DC consul you need to have a 6 month rental contract bearing the Financas stamp. Those details and the entire process are in the article "US Citizens Moving to Portugal: Demystifying the Paper Trail" posted on this blog. It's your 'bible'.

If you need a rental in or near Tavira email me as I have several good contacts. We are living in Santa luzia just outside of tavira until we purchase a villa.
