Being self-employed in Portugal

Hi guys! We've been members of Expat Exchange for a few months now and read through the forum posts all the time, especially when we have questions. But some days we feel more confused than anything, and we are hoping for some light on our situation please!

We are a small family of 3 (our daughter is 4), living in South Africa, and we have been planning our move to Portugal for the last year and a half, hoping to be there by October 2020. My husband and I are both self-employed in SA and would like to work independently in Portugal as well (we have a few ideas of what we would like to do there), but we can't seem to find clear and straight answers as to how to go about working independently/as self-employed individuals in Portugal once we are there. It seems like we get away with anything in SA and you can literally run almost any kind of business from your garage, but we have no idea what to expect from the self-employed scene in Portugal. How easy is it to work for yourself there? Which Visa do we apply for (we have received some conflicting info here too)? We would prefer to live in a smaller town, perhaps more inland as well (...we will need a few years in a rural town in Pt to recover from the craziness of SA :)
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Obrigada!

To 'AngFletch': Have you gone to the SEF.pt website and looked at the self-employment visa? Its a program that lets you come here, apply for the visa from here and then work at your business. Registering, taxing and licensing your business are not addressed there but I would think that accountants such as Julia Filipe at MasterTax Consultants and the EuroFinesco firm could tell you more about the business scene. You could also reach Linda Weygant, who moved to PT under this visa, and Mark Shapiro, who is also from SA and doing architectural work here. Both are on facebook.
