Simple question; where is it flat?

My wife and I are prospecting Portugal as a future home but we shall be limited by our medical constraints; our creaking joints refuse all but the most modest inclines. Thus I understand Lisbon would be out of the question?

Would welcome any suggestions although we would prefer a city location with good local transport availability as we do not intend to use a car.

IMHO setùbal would seem to fit your requirements. A major portion of the city is flat, has good public transport, and is well served with good medical facilities. It has an exceptional historic oldtown, nice parks, and a beach area.

@ vernanjohn

Thanks for the suggestion. A quick look suggests more of a busy port and industrial activity rather than the retirement location we need. All the same, we will look into it further.

However, googling Setubal introduced close towns Sesimbra, Cascais, Troia that attracted our attention as being a bit more modern for the tastes of elderly retiree residents. But what a surprise when we looked closer - everything seemed to start off from around 2 million euros - who can afford that?

Have the property (acquisition) prices in Portugal gone mad? It seems as if Portugal property prices are higher than Spain?

to 'fetcherklyn': veraanjohn have good tips about Setubal, where you'll have many flat and beautiful streets dotted with shops, markets, produce and restaurants. You can take the ferry to Troia for the beautiful beaches there, a walk in the sea, and a bus ride into Lisbon for the day. But Troia is DEAD, Sesimbra is industrial, Cascais is very hilly. For the right pace of life with great access to medical services and a caring, friendly community, look at Setubal. Or secondly the Algarve, which is overrun with tourists in the high season and dead in the low season.

A standard property costs nowhere near EUR 2 million, so we don't know what you've been looking at. A mansion, or a palace perhaps?

Portugal is far cheaper than Spain for property, unless you're talking of prices for rural homes that need a lot of work done in which case they are very cheap in both countries.

@ Bemadan

Glad to see you wonder at the prices I quoted as we were amazed too. In fact, my research was hardly worth the title as I simply googled "Property prices in Cascais y Troia" and these were the prices offered by the first sites I looked at. I probably jumped in on the premium expat sites although the properties offered at those prices (Euros 1.6 million up) were not for mansions.

If you check Idealista, the going rate for a house in central Cascais is EUR 1 million and upwards, so yes it is expensive, but EUR 2 million is not the going rate. There are four houses in decent condition on the first page of my search in central Cascais for well below EUR 1 million, one at 395,000, another at 775,000, another at 598,000, and another at 499,000.

However, must you live in the most expensive area? Remember that expensive is not necessarily the best, however that is to be defined by you. I wouldn't trade in my house for an identical one in Cascais for the world.
