Are there any places in Portugal where cycling is a normal way to get around?We have just started thinking about retiring to Portugal. At home in Glasgow we mainly use our bikes to get around and sometimes for day trips. I don't drive so I'd like to be able to travel locally by bike without bad traffic or too many hills.

Hello check out a website;
Www. Theculturetrip.com
They have a good deal of information on cycling in Lisbon.
The city has taken great strides in infrastructure upgrades for cyclists.

Hope this helps.

Thx

The largest cities like Lisbon and Porto will have the best bike infrastructure such as reserved cycling lanes, but Lisbon is a very hilly city. So is Porto.

I personally feel it'd be much more fun cycling in a provincial town, with easy access to the countryside. Probably somewhere along the coast where there are no or few hills, is your best bet. You do see cyclists here, but mostly ones that take their cycling very seriously and cycle long distances at the weekend in large groups, often lycra-clad. Not your average daily cyclist just heading into town a few km away.

I live on quite a steep hill, but that doesn't stop me cycling, and I can even cycle all the way home uphill without getting off my bike. Now, that's an achievement.

I am moving to Porto, and from what I observed, my only biking will be recreational, off-street biking. If you spend any amount of time in Portugal, you will understand.

Take a look at these websites where apparently they've looked into the bike-friendliness of each of Portugal's municipalities, and Murtosa is the winner:

We have discovered flat bike/pedestrian lanes on either side of the river in Porto. They’re quite scenic.
