Help me understand the Type 1/Type D7 Visa

Hi,
My wife and I are in the early stages of a possible early retirement. I'm 52, and she's 51. We don't want to touch our 401k for a LOOOOONG time, but we might be able to use other savings and some freelance work to make it happen. I'm just not clear on what is and isn't allowed under the Type 1/Type D7 Visa.

I've read the "demystifying the paper trail" article (which is really great) and it uses a phrase I've seen in other research, that the D7 visa allows for "professional activity" while living in Portugal. Would a "professional activity" allow for my freelance work for clients back in the USA? Or, would the "The Entrepreneur, Employed and Self-Employed Program (Article 88/89)" visa be a better option for me?
Seems like the D7 requires less effort to obtain, but I'm not sure if I can legally earn income from clients based in the USA. Also, not sure on the possible tax considerations and NHR options.

So, if anyone has any experience, I'd love to hear.
thanks!

I would recommend contacting Bruno Afonso. He is a tax accountant here in Portugal who has made reputation assisting expats in matters such as your inquiry. He can be reached on Facebook or you can PM me and I can give you his contact info. IMO from what I have read I don’t believe income derived as a “digital nomad” falls under regulation as being prohibited as long as your not competing with PT citizens.
