Relocation Company

I've read many postings about relocation companies, and checked the (often useful/interesting) web sites of some of the bigger companies.

I haven't seen anyone state a price, however.

I’m figuring to budget $10-15k for moving from a 2 bedroom house to Cascáis, Portugal. But I just made that up. Realizing that there are countless variables, is this a reasonable ballpark?

Any more than that would be, as they say, “real money”.

I used UPakWeShip. Check their website. They were true to their word, organized, everything went smoothly, and I paid way less than you are talking about, but i didn't bring furniture. My expat friends here didn't bring furniture either....consider whether you really want to haul that stuff.

Thanks for the reply, Helene01.

My understanding of how this works is that the charge is by volume, not weight (because it's all done with shipping containers, which are a volume proposition). So I was planning on bringing at least some furniture.

I may be wrong, but Europeans don't appear to share the American concept of couch comfort. I've never seen a European couch that was anything beyond functional. So that was going to be my main furniture issue.....

Many of us have used Global International Relocation *https://www.globalmobility.pt/?lang=en) quite successfully. They manage the entire process, deal with the customs issues, assuming you have obtained a baggage certificate, and contract with quality movers at both ends. The price we had from them was in the middle of the three quotes we got. There can be issues with delivery in Portugal that drive the price up - we needed temporary street closure, for example. Also, it may require transfers to a smaller truck. In Cascais, unless you're in the older part near the center, it's unlikely that will be an issue. Global will give you a quote based on sending someone to your current abode and seeing what you are shipping.

Many people use UPack WeShip happily, but that does require you do all the work and I'm not sure how they would handle insurance issues. We have a lot of art and did not want to be responsible for packing it ourselves. I believe that company can also ship into another country in Europe and avoid the requirement for the baggage certificate.

You should think carefully about what you bring. Large appliances and small kitchen appliances are better left behind unless you want to fill your house with transformers. If you bring beds, bring mattresses, as the sizing is different. Furniture is less expensive here and it doesn't make sense to pay to bring low quality pieces.

If you are on Facebook, you should join the Americans & Friends PT group, there are many useful files stored there, including one on shipping and how to get the baggage certificate. Without the baggage certificate, you could be liable for huge duties.
