Our 90 days run out at the end of May, but we are having difficulty getting accurate information regarding an extension. I have sent an email to SEF, but they only respond with “visa” information, and it doesn’t not pertain to our situation. We want to continue our stay in Porto for the “long term” but do not want to have a costly penalty when we feel it is safe to leave. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the visa has been extended to June 30th. I’m sure someone will re confirm this for you:)

to "RisaPizza": You are OK! In March, the Portuguese government extended the validity on all visas (I posted this update in this forum then, with details of what's included...you'll find it if you search). For persons here on the 90 day 'tourist visa' it is valid until 30 June. You'll face no penalties or fees when you leave Portugal...presumably in early July. You say you want to stay for the long term: if you mean for longer, as in applying for a 120 day visa, you need to view the details for doing that in the article here called "US Citizens Moving to Portugal: Demystifying the Paper Trail". It would be really tricky, tho, as SEF is so terribly backed up.

That link is for "normal" times. As craigandmicki pointed out, the rules are different now due to the coronavirus.

Is there ANY chance it is possible to apply for a Visa extension from Portugal if already there on a tourist visa, rather than initiating it from the US? The SEF website seems to indicate that visa extensions for the purpose of a Resident Permit application, are available by appointment. Anyone done it this way?

I am still searching for the “new rules” that are in effect during the pandemic. Any recent news regarding those of us with only short stay (90 day) allowance extending beyond June 30?
Thank you to all that have responded.

Some one posted the other day the following:
The Portuguese government announced that the June 30th extension is moved to October 30. This is for D7/Type 1 Visas but we aren't clear if this is for the short-stay, 90 day tourist Visa. Due to it not being specifically cited, we believe it does not cover that tourist Visa."
Did anyone one else hear of this? as I have been looking online and have not been able to find anything???

FWIW, I am applying for a D7 Residency Visa, which I understand is good for a year. I was under the impression that I could come to visit Portugal or zny Sc chjngd en n.v ation for 90 days without a visa. But, I am Canadian, and wonder if Portugal visa/visitation rules are different for others.
