Will some limited Spanish be an asset or is Portugese too different than Spanish spoken in Mexico? Best city to live in if I don't import my car or is it easy to bring a car over? If moving to Portugal are domestic pets subject to quarantine? Better to rent or buy a small home? Where are Ex-Pat communities centered in this region?

Well, Portuguese and Spanish are both romance languages, so to that extent there are similarities. you could start by watching some Portuguese YouTube videos to see how much of it you can follow. And take a look at a PT newspaper online and do the same.

Good advice! Thank You. I'm about two days into exploring a move to Portugal as an option within the next five years-- and also will plan to visit at some point. It was also shared that there is an English program to teach Portuguese that could be helpful with this much lead time.

My wife and I are on our official glide path to emigration which I have called Plan B in 23: Portugal 4 US! As an initial fact-finding step, I will be making a solo scouting visit there in April focusing on Lisbon, Tevira, Porto, Braga, Coimbra and Tomar. I’m happy to share my thoughts once I’ve collected them on my return, and if you can share your impressions from when you visit, that would be great. There seem to be more than a handful of US actively working to execute this option so am happy to collaborate, coordinate and facilitate the journey for all. As to language courses, an easy initial step is to start Portugese lessons on DuoLingo, which I have been doing for about 2 months. It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s free. And the daily minimum (if that’s all you can or choose to do) only requires about 10 minutes of your time. Also, University of Coimbra has a good program I hear, although am uncertain if it’s offered online.

Hi US2Portugal, I would love to know what you find out. We are visiting in June and looking at Algarve and the silver coast. We are willing to share our experience as well.

What about Porto did you like? I will be visiting there in April for several days to explore both the city itself and nearby environs. What would you recommend I see/do/experience? Any feedback would be appreciated. I’ll be staying right near the train station.

It’s a deal. Your trip was several months after mine so it should give me plenty of time to sort through my experiences and transcribe them into some sort of cogent insights which I would be happy to share. There is so much to consider - and so many details, minor and grave. I’m also attending the Live and Invest Overseas Conference on Portugal while I am there so will have an opportunity to hear from and question realtors, lawyers, accountants and others to get some of the key questions answered and that conference occurs right after I visit Lisbon but before I go to all the other spots, so am hoping it will inform my visit. So, yes, happy to stay in touch and share what we both learn.

Yes, we were there in October 2021 and did not want to leave. The City is so beautiful, the streets, views, churches, city center parks. The people were friendly, helpful and most all spoke English. The Duoro river walk was amazing, both day and night. The shops and restaurants were various an plentiful, friendly, welcoming and food amazing. The night time scene also was spectacular with outside musicians playing pretty much throughout the evening. Just an amazing relaxing City - much different than experience in city center Lisbon. The streets are narrow and sometimes steep for walking. I just worry about retiring there as it is much colder than I'm accustom to coming from SoCalifornia! Check out some YouTube videos on Porto - and others experiences as well.

I second Porto for the reasons mentioned. When we originally came to look for a place to move to we were thinking that place would most likely be Lisbon. Algarve was not an option as I travelled (pre-covid) extensively so needed an international airport with regular airlines.
We started off in Lisbon for a week and then Porto for 5 days. The first evening in Porto we looked at each other and admitted that we both fell in love with the city, something we didn't experience at all in Lisbon. So we settled down eventually in Porto.
That´s why it is essential that you visit, tour around. Everyone has their own requirements and things they are looking for.
