Taking a Bird to Portugal

We have a large parakeet that we have had for 8 years, and are wanting to take with us to Portugal when we move there.
Has anybody had any experience taking a bird and can give us words of wisdom?
Thanks, for any advice.

Sure you can. You just need a health certificate form accredited vet. Keep it in isolation and have it tested for avian flu.

Hi!

We recently moved from the US to London (and are considering retiring in the next few years in Portugal, that's why I'm here!).

Bringing our English Bulldog to London was so worrisome, I found a facebook group that has an open corridor between the US and the UK. You may be able to find one from the US to mainland Europe. Bring your bird, (or dog/cat) over that way.

The group is called US/UK pet and dog repatriation group, and the flights were going about once a month when we came over.

Basically, a small group of people with visas (or passports) gather, and book a charter flight together. We flew from Teterboro NJ to Biggiin Hill, London. There were 8 humans, 8 dogs and 3 cats that flew over together.

People drove from Miami and Utah, one flew in with her small dog from Honolulu. We were planning it for months. It was a reasonable $6500. but could be more, based on how many people share the flight.

If you can't find a US to Europe group, it's quite a drive then to Portugal, who knows if you could even bring a bird into the UK, and you would have to look at getting the bird an EU pet passport. But it's doable. And if your bird is like family. Everyone on our little flight would have done anything to get our cats and dogs over safely.

You may have some luck calling The Ark at JFK. They do all the travel for dogs, cats, race horses, making sure all the paperwork is correct, handling them on and off the planes, maybe they have some information for you as well.

The paperwork is quite complicated but if researched well completely doable by a licensed vet.

I hope this helps start your search.
