Is it rainy and/or dreary in January and February? Are temps usually in the 50’s and 60’s (Fahrenheit) Are there many shops open? Restaurants? Thank you!

Portugal has a number of climates, your question can't be answered as if Portugal was on small city. You have to decide what kind of climate you like and then look for it. There is everything from hot and dry, especially in the summer, to warm and wet, cold and wet, mountain weather, etc.

Except for Algarve and maybe some resorts, everything in Portugal is open through the winter. Of course there are closures around the Christmas and New Years, but even then, you can usually find hotels with decent restaurants that are open.

Dear Maxxy07,

A lot will depend upon which part of Portugal and which city/town you're considering. It IS rainier and cooler everywhere during the winter months. How cool and how wet will change from the Algarve to the river valley to the northern end, etc. I found some information on some of the cities that we're considering:

Sintra & Cascais:
Jan. Temps: 52-59 & 3.66" rain
Feb. Temps: 53-61 & 2.76" rain
Mar. Temps: 55-63 & 2.56" rain

Peniche, Obidos & Caldes da Rainha:
Jan. Temps: 53-58 & 3.54" rain
Feb. Temps: 53-59 & 2.65" rain
Mar. Temps: 55-61 & 2.69" rain

Nazare & Tomar:
Jan. Temps: 48-57 & 3.42" rain
Feb. Temps: 49-59 & 2.73" rain
Mar. Temps: 51-62 & 2.87" rain

Coimbra:
Jan. Temps: 46-57 & 4.39" rain
Feb. Temps: 47-60 & 3.09" rain
Mar. Temps: 49-64 & 3.17" rain

Lagos, Albufeira & Tavira:
Jan. Temps: 53-61 & 2.81" rain
Feb. Temps: 53-62 & 2.43" rain
Mar. Temps: 55-64 & 2.44" rain

As you can see, the further north and/or interior you go, the cooler and wetter it may be (also consider humidity levels affecting the sensation of feeling cooler.

In regards to restaurants, etc. being open, that too, will depend upon the size of the town and how driven it is for tourists. If it's a very seasonal and/or smaller town, places may shut down during the winter months.

this January on the islands it was half and half rainy. Every year was different last year was sunnier. 60"s during the day and 50's at night. It was much windier than the summer. All the same restaurants that are open in the summer are open all year.

Thank you for the info! Sounds like the panhandle of Florida this past January!

I’m sorry. I forgot to specify we would be coming to the Algarve region!
