Would you recommend having 2 cars or a car and a vespa and can you lease a car like you can in the US?

We have seen online many apts that can only be rented furnished is this the norm?

In NYC we have grocery delivery does this exist?

I can’t speak to rental situation but as an owner of vacation apt in Cascais area for many years, I can address some of your issues from the point of view of a fellow New Yorker ( Brooklyn Heights). Cars can be rented easily but they will be stick shift. So you must specifically order an automatic and the rental is significantly higher. I also own a Vespa, which I just sold as I decided, for my anticipated move to Portugal full time, it’s best to rent a scooter when I want to ride and to buy a car. In Cascais, you can rent scooters. Considering that Portugal weather is usually perfect for riding, I could never understand why there are not more motor bikes and convertibles on the road. So it’s really a personal decision whether to bring your Vespa and one that may be costly, but if you don’t, renting is available. Yes, there are home deliveries of groceries. I personally go shopping, because not knowing the language, makes it necessary to see the packaging and ask questions. However, I then have my purchases delivered by Continente, Auchin or Corte English, huge supermarkets in Cascais area. Deliveries over the years have always on time! When I am in Portugal, I miss Costco, which is available in Madrid and Seville, Spain. Incidentally, Heinz ketchup and Hellman’s mayo is sold in Portugal, along with other US products. No Thomas English muffins, but I think the flat round similar looking bread that is made in Madeira and Azores is better.

I am thinking about an electric car… good for the environment, less expensive than gas, huge incentive from the government in terms of taxes.

Unless you have a garage with two parking spaces and find a real need for two cars… I think 1 is going to be sufficient for us. We are downsizing everything and streamlining Our life.

Good Luck!!

Where are you looking to live? In cities, it's easier and less expensive to skip the car and just rent when you need it. If you're out of the city, it depends on the area. I don't know anyone here that has two cars unless it's for work reasons.
