Live music in local bars?

New Topic Newest First

I am from a city in the USA with a lively local music scene. Many restaurants and small bars have local musicians/groups for live music in the evenings. The only mention of music I have seen in this forum are places to hear the regional specialty - Fado. If I live in a university town like Coimbra or other towns, will I find local musicians to enjoy and support?

Hi Blueridgeboy1,

As you guessed, there will be lots of Fado in Coimbra, but you can try Bar Quebra. They have jazz outside in front of the bar in summer. Also Aqui Base Tango, a bar with live music; or Piano Negro a piano bar that gets high marks from patrons near the university.

Hello Blueridge,

I lived for a long time outside of Cville and I used to perform and attend live music gigs all of the time in the tri-state, small concerts, open mics and house concerts.
I have been in PT for 6 years now and when people ask me what do I miss from USA the first thing that comes to mind is LIVE MUSIC, (not stadium concerts). the scene here is different, I have tried many times and keep on trying but it just doesn't get even close to the US scene.
There was a nice bar in Estoril that belonged to a famous actor/singer from the 60s and 70s that had open mic/jam nights but it wouldn't start until 11PM and by the time the music started most of them were drunk on on the way to it.
there is jams at jazz places but most of those musicians are full of themselves, no patient for that.
hopefully things start changing
best
