Travel Insurance Requirement

I've seen several different answers as to how long your travel insurance needs to be for Visa application purposes; 4 months, 6 months, 8 months, 1 year. Does anyone know the correct policy length of time? I have my appointment at the San Francisco PT consolate on Dec 30th.
Thank you

RMS,
I did my visa paperwork at the Consulate in Newark. I provided them with travel insurance for 11 months (I don't know whether it was an overkill) starting from the day of the "planned" departure for Portugal. When it turned out that I wouldn't depart for Portugal as early as I had planned, the insurance company, upon my request, provided a refund for the unused two months (it had to be done my calling and then e-mailing them) even though I had notified them of that only one day before the coverage period would commence. You can shorten and move the end of the insurance coverage period later on, once you're there, as SEF is said to require a local health insurer (someone, please correct me if I am wrong) instead of travel insurance.

Which insurance company did you use? And anyone else, which company did you use and how long was the policy length? Was it satisfactory to the Consulate?
Thanks in advance!

I used Cigna. Once I received my residence permit, I was able to register for the national health care plan and also obtain private insurance from a local provider. I had scheduled the travel insurance for a year, but only used it for 6 months; you are able to cancel at any time.

Bom día RMS. We used AXA and had 6 month term from our arrival date this May. Newark, NJ Consulate said that was perfect. Like someone else mentioned, AXA also seemed to be flexible about postponing or extending the dates as needed.

I used WorldTrips. The 11-month coverage period I chose was satisfactory for the Consulate in Newark. To be on the safe side, you can take lengthier coverage: when, while in Portugal, everything falls into place and you no longer need it, you can "cut off" unwanted months and cancel the coverage as of the end of the "cut-off" month. They refunded me for the to be unusable (due to delayed arrival) first two months of coverage. WorldTrips seem to be quite flexible.

Besides a requirement that the insurance cover 30,000 Euros, any other requirements. For example, does it need to cover repatriation (cost of return to your home country)?

In "Demystifying the Paper Trail for United States Citizens Moving to Portugal," found on this site, repatriation coverage is required.
