Alec,
Since you seem to be starting in Singapore, you are probably going to pay more per some of the links I found.

You might try some of the links on http://www.google.com/search?q=cost%20train%20singapore%20bangkok

This link seems to have some pretty good info http://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm
where it also says
Tickets bought in Singapore:
The fares shown in the table above are what you will pay if you buy tickets in Malaysia. A strange - you might say unfair - quirk of the system is that tickets bought in Singapore are about twice as expensive as those bought at stations in Malaysia, because the fare is payable in Singapore dollars but at the Ringgit amount. In other words, a fare that costs 40 Ringgit in Malaysia will cost 40 Singapore Dollars if bought in Singapore, even though there are 6 Ringgit to the UK pound and only 2.7 Singapore Dollars to the pound..! This also applies to tickets pre-booked by e-mail or internet and picked up in Singapore. If you think the hassle is worth it, you can avoid paying the extra by taking local transport to Johor Bahru (the first station in Malaysia, just North of the causeway from Singapore Island) and buying your tickets from there. Otherwise, if you have booked (say) a Singapore-Bangkok journey by e-mail, pick up just the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur ticket in Singapore (at the Singapore dollar rate), but wait until you reach KL to pick up the KL-Butterworth and Butterworth-Bangkok tickets at the Malaysian Ringgit rate.
