General SE Asia Qs

Hello all,

Thai wife and I are returning to SE Asia to unwind after our early retirement. We hope to do a circular route beginning in Bangkok, Southeast through Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh, then up along the Vietnam coast, crossing Laos to Northern Thailand, before circling back to BKK. We've done plenty of research, are fairly simple and have traveled a bit already. We hope to be in this loop for 4-6 months, and have a few starter questions, I hope you can help with...

Transportation: Flying might get expensive, and car rental/purchase feels tough. Will buses be plentiful enough to do most of the loop? Are they generally safe (for us and and luggage)?. Are shared minivans used (we did lot of this in S. America)?

Accommodations: We would prefer no dorm like hostels, hotels *may* be expensive longer term. We both love to cook and host, so kitchen equipped is preferred... Can anyone shed light on week-to-week renting options?

I am sure this is the 1st of a few forum posts, so Thank in Advance for any help!

p.s. If info is Thai specific, I may post similar in other SE Asia forums... no offense intended!

Thanks!

Throughout Thailand, busses are the easiest way to travel. In the more known tourist centers like CM you will be able to find short term rentals, serviced apartments if you want.

Thanks Ken, I've seen you actively participate, and it helps. Wife I Thai, and we want to bumble around for a couple months total, thinking we may be able to do on (2) 30 day tourist visas, but may be easier to set up something bigger, while still in the states... thoughts?

Also, we want visit some of the highlites of Cambodia, Vietnam, and maybe Laos and Myanmar. Will buses (or trains) be our most likely options (other than air)?

Really interested in a VOIP (Skype, etc) chat with a local, to begin a dialogue with a local. If you wouldn't mind, PM me, and I will provide info, and sched a short talk.. TIA!
