There are plenty of cheap hotels and hostels in and around London, try premier inn.
They are really good value for money.

I suggest this 10
1. Big Ben
2. Buckingham Palace
3. Tower Bridge
4. London Eye
5. Westminster Abbey
6. Tower of London
7. Trafalgar Square
8. Houses of Parliament
9. Piccadilly Circus
10. St. Paul's Cathedral

Most of the places above are walk-by places and you can be able to visit them in one day.

Stay near Trafalgar Square. The scene there is amazing! West End, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Oxford Street and Soho are all within walking distance.

I was in a similar situation to you and decided to choose a hostel, rather than a hotel. The big benefit that became clear was that I found it a lot easier to make friends as hostels tended to be a lot more socialable!

Absolutely agree here, those areas are just beautiful. Especially during a summer's day!
