I am changing alarm monitoring Services. Prosegur was not very reliable and will remove their equipment. Question is my new provider will bill me $600 to install a new system that I will own, is this reasonable? Thank you for all responses

When we bought our house it already had SEVP equipment in the house so we continued the service.
We are now paying slightly over $68.00 US per month for a monitored service. I would be more concerned about the monthly cost than the initial set up cost as it adds up over the years.
The equipment is expensive here especially if you go for all the bells and whistles.

No way to tell you if $600 is very reasonable or a rip off. It depends upon the equipment you have. Every window and door wired or using wireless, smoke detectors, glass break sensors, motion detectors, cellular back up monitoring.

Btw to anyone where Antel is putting in Fiber Optic cable. They will be abandoning the copper phone wires and will be switching the phones to connect to the router. Works fine but if there is no power there will be no alarm monitoring, You can put is a UPS to keep your router powered or put in cellular monitoring but otherwise if someone trips your power, which is not uncommon for thieves to do, you are in trouble.

FYI we use Maxima and they seem much better than Prosegur.

Our company switched us to wireless monitoring which also has the advantage of letting them know which sensor tripped the alarm. We were getting a lot of false alarms from one sensor especially on hot days so they dialed it back a bit and it seems to have fixed the problem.
Our system has a battery backup so if the power is off it still works.

Morell,

Point I was making has to do with the Antel switch to VOIP. If that happens your alarm will work locally but not connect to monitoring.

Similarly the term Wireless monitoring is confusing. Do you mean battery powered sensors that communicate to the alarm system wirelessly? That is different from cellular or radio central station monitoring. Wireless is great in the house until the batteries start to fail and you can still know which sensor is reporting trouble with a wired system if it is done right. I find wireless best when you just want to add a sensor or two but not for every door and window.

I meant no longer through the telephone system so cellular.
If the power is off then the battery back up keeps the alarm working. We have to buy a new one every three years or so.

Before they switched to cellular they said they could not tell us which sensor was triggering the alarm from their office but now they can.
I think a dog or two is probably the best deterrent.
