What do you miss?

What do Expats in Uruguay miss most from their home countries? Much more is now available here and at much better prices than when I first arrived and internet shopping is much more accessible now too but still pricey with shipping. But aside from the price differences most things are available via Mercado libre or in stores if you look hard enough.

Mostly I miss various foods and flavors. Indian or Asian cuisine for example. Or even the convenience of chicken stock in box snd not reconstituted from a cube.

Made a pastrami this past week and while not Katz’s Deli quite good and beats that gray flavorless stuff the sell here in the supermarket and call pastrami. Made for a great Reuben sandwich despite no rye bread here.

Something for all those folks thinking of moving overseas to consider.

Another example is cafes. Common all over Europe and many places in the US where Starbucks didn’t force them out but not terribly common in Uruguay, outside of Montevideo. Only the last couple of years have a bunch opened up near us in Punta Ballena with yet a new place just this Christmas. Clean, stylish comfortable and serving better pastries and light fare than was common here.

We find the changes and progress in Uruguay amazing and definitely cuts down on that sense of missing home…,
