Hello! Already living in a capital city (Lisbon, Portugal) in moving to Uruguay in 2 months, we decided to make a change and buy a property in the small village of Jose Ignacio (30 mins from Punta del Este, 40 mins from regional airport and less than 3 hours from Montevideo). This provides us the change we are looking for while having very easy access to a big city if we'll feel the crave.
After arriving to Jose Ignacio and check for housing the decision was a no-brainer. People at location.uy, the real estate agency where we bought our house were extremely helpful (and patient) with us. Check the website and have a feel of the housing options there.

Finally, as a European, I had a very good vive about security in the country. All countries/cities have areas and neighborhoods that are less safe. I was checking some security indexes:
- Uruguay is 30th in the 2020 Global Happiness Index, ahead of many European countries and best ranked in Latin America;
- Uruguay is ranked the most peaceful country in South America in the 2021 Global Peace Index.
Regards

Ee are looking into Solymar just outside of MVD. Its a pet friendly area. The beach is walking distance, there’s plenty of restaurants, stores and a mall nearby

Bit closer to MVD is Barra de Carrasco (Canelones). We moved here to be just outside of the noisy city but also be close to the surrounding schools and family who live downtown.

Our street is very quiet, near the Rambla. Like anywhere crime is an issue, but all of our neighbours have dogs in their gardens and most have good security systems. We have cameras/sensors (home installed and Gamma)

Touch wood only 1 incident in 3 years. (caught 2 thieves jumping over my portion/gate shooping around down the driveway - they ran off as soon as they saw me, after this we had an external takex sensor installed also)

Pocitos (mvd suburb), parts of Canelones, Atlantida, Pueblo Eden, Piriapolis, Punta Ballena & Punta Del Este.

All have different favorable aspects. My personal favorites are Punta Ballena & Pueblo Eden. Beautiful, safe & nice quality of life.
