Hello! Worried about one's safety by being American.
Are there any safety issues, fear or instability since the 2018 revolt?

There was definitely a time around the 2019 problems where antipathy towards Americans and foreigners seemed notably higher, the police and security services were less friendly, but that has gone away and my recent two months day in Nicaragua felt entirely safe. I have traveled all over the country, I eat at fritangas, take taxies everywhere, go out at night, and I typically stay in "off the beaten track" places. My house wasn't in a gated community since I didn't live in Managua (LOL), just a normal City neighborhood, and never experienced any problem. Obviously you need to be a little careful in public places, avoid certain areas at certain times of the day, be wary of your valuables...etIin short, don't look like a chicken because chickens get plucked.

I would agree that safety is not a problem in Nicaragua. I live in a rural location, close to the Honduran border, in the northern mountains,, and we feel safer than in the US. That is not saying much in these troubled times.

We learned early on,, that you CANNOT leave anything outside overnight.

We have alarms, and a large yard light on a tower. The alarms rarely go off. Some suggest a dog,, and that is the standard Nicaraguan alarm, but we cannot abide the all night barking.

We have a bit of crop (we learned not to plant white corn early on. The yellow feed card does not make tasty tortillas),, and chicken thievery,, but have never lost a major animal. The neighbors dogs regularly get into our sweet corn. I bought a couple of spring traps that we designed for coyotes, but haven't had the heart to set them out.

The politics of killing or seriously damaging a neighbor's dog is also a consideration.
