HI, I am trying to move from the US to the Bahamas as soon as I can. Every website keeps giving me different qualifications. I dont really care what island I move to or what I do. What do I need to move?

In order to move here to live, you will need to either have a job (which is not easy to come by as you may not have any "special" qualifications that would enable you to be granted a work permit), or you will need to prove that you are able to support yourself without a job. As someone else has suggested, otherwise, you would need to come as a tourist with limited time allowed here, or risk being an illegal. In order to obtain residency status, you will need to purchase a property valued at $250,000 minimum. That would allow you to apply for annual residency. At $500,000, you would be allowed to apply for permanent residency without the right to work.
As everyone here has suggested, you will need to provide more information about what info you are looking for.
Hope that helps.

Dear Flamingoer - I don't think you need to notify anyone but when you fly out the airline will ask to see your return ticket and that is where the questions start.

You'll need to provide some more details to get an answer. Are you buying a house, coming to work, retiring etc. Doesn't sound like you've done too much research if you don't know which island you're moving to yet...

Dan, that is very interesting...I wonder how they would know you are leaving the country? I am getting ready to make my move next week and I have not had to notify anyone in the US that I am leaving. I have dealt with Bahamas Immigration and that is all....I don't owe anybody, but just curious. . .

If you happen to owe back taxes, the INS and IRS can prevent you from leaving the country. It happened to someone I know......

In terms of Uncle Sam, you still need to file tax returns, etc. but you can move anywhere you want.

As for what I understand out of your "move", you will need first to fill out an immigration form, which is an application form. same for all islands of the Bahamas. There is no way to get a "status" other than visitor or illegal without this. More info when you detail your situation. Otherwise go in line for Bahamas Laws - dept immigration.
