I am planning to move to Brasil by the end of this year. I have so many questions and things that I am unsure of. My wife is a Brazilian national which makes things pretty simple, but of course there a lot of things unknown to me. I am hoping to get some input from others that have gone through this process.
Thanks!

Thanks for your response I live in Brazil now for over 4 years near São Luis. I also have US bank account get my Money there but have two sources and they require like you said they won’t wire to a foreign account. You can once the money in your account. I am a permanent resident. Like you we deposited money each month in a Brazilian bank to have automatic payment for normal every day expenses. I also have a Internation credit card and a Debit card that does pay back my ATM fees. We both are doing the same thing. Thanks for your advice

Hi Brazil16..........So let me try and answer some of your questions. My wife and I are both retired from the USA and living in Praia da Pipa full time since July 2015. We both collect Social Security and no, SSA does not withhold any money from your check because your living over-seas. You get the entire amount that you are entitled to. However, SSA will not send your check by mail or wire to South America which is probably a good thing (tax liability to Brazil). You also are not required to close your US bank account, in fact, it is important that you do have a US Bank account as the banks in Brazil are not trustworthy. We have Bank of America where our social security checks are deposited automatically. B ofA debit cards work well in Brazil and we draw money we need from that account through a Brazilian Bank ATM. We also have Bradesco Bank account here in Brazil and we pull money from our US account and keep a max of about R$2,000 in that account so we can pay bills on line rather than standing in line each month for hours. If we can help you with any other questions are prep concerns for moving to Brazil please let us know.
