Anyone else in Envigado or Sabaneta? I'd love to make some connections.

After that I will return to Medellin and grab a bus to Armenia and/or Periera to see whether city life can work for me (doubtful, but I will be alone after all). While there I plan to check out those smaller towns we discussed.

I currently live in the country, on a lake, close *10 kms to a village and 50 to a city. I drw from the lake and have an onsite septic system. So to me, Guatape and Salento represent a step up in infrastructure. But I am concerned as to whether those places have appropriate rental accommodation at reasonable cost in view of the high tourism factor. To investigate that I have booked accoms in Guatape for Feb 11-13.

Steve, we are liking Salento and Gataupe from Google Street view or something like them. We don't need all those big city services.
Let us know what you think.

It seems people who gravitate toward Envigado and Sabaneta tend to be stable and friendly. Or maybe those areas make people that way. At aby rate, this is an unusually friendly thread, kudos. I would move to one of these areas, but I still have a lot of online warring to do, and so I'll stay in the ol pit for now :P

Thank you for the response. My mother and I are looking forward to visiting Colombia in February- she and I are flying down to check out the area.

Andresen

Envigado is just North of Sabaneta so it's a little closer to Medellin. I would recommend checking out the area just east of the Exito/Home Center and west of Parque Envigado. Then you would be close to the metro, buses to Medellin, downtown Envigado and the new mall due to be completed end of 2017.

Sabaneta is very cheap, beautiful and safe to live in, email me for more information. [email protected]

Greetings! I will throw this question out and am excited to hear responses. I am looking to move to Colombia near the end on 2017. Bringing my 74 yo mother, myself, and at least 2 of my 3 children (16 & 28). Working on the 21 yo. What area or areas would you suggest we investigate to live in?
I appreciate your responses.

I like both Envigado and Sabaneta, only draw back is the metro accessibility.
there is a bus or taxi from each metro to the center of each, kind of ,a hassle.
It is about 15 minutes from Laureles to each of these districts, I prefer to visit instead of living there. Been in Laureles 180 days a year for 3 years

Important question, are you staying here for days, weeks, months or years?

Yes Parque Sabaneta in the center still preserves the small-town feel. Also you'll sometimes see horses on some of the roads in Sabaneta - I see them almost every week. This is something you almost never see in El Poblado or other parts of Medellín.

SunsetSteve
  12/23/2016 08:15 EST

I do notice that some youtube vids about Sabaneta show quite a few high-rise buildings and 4-lane thoroughfares. I guess I am hoping there is a strong sense of a centre of town that preserves the small-town feel.

@SunsetSteve, the population of Sabanata is higher than 38K. It's now about 55,000 and expected to grow to about 58,000 next year.

OK, thanks to this thread I've been looking into Sabaneta a little bit and so far I am very very impressed. Not a ton of info on the web but I dislike big cities and even those in Eje Cafetero are too big for my liking. The 38K population of Sabaneta is more to my liking. So I am thinking of altering my itinerary a bit. I have Feb 7-11 in a bnb in Medellina nd then 2 days in Guatape. Instead of then heading out by bus to Pereira, now I am thinking of booking time in Sabaneta. I will have already checked it out during my stay in Med, so I have to decide whether to pre-book something or wait until I am there.

This is the most friendly thread that I have seen in my month or two of constant searching.. This seems like it would be a nice group of companions. ?Si? I am in Atlanta now but will be there NLT March 1. I am a great cook and am interested in rooming with someone else so we can have a full kitchen. I have $1600SSA.

I agree with @Phillipjamesrogers, Sabaneta is very safe and american friendly, I also walk just about every where - except for the huge Mayorca mall at the northern edge of Sabaneta, which is a short bus ride for 1,800 pesos.

SunsetSteve
  12/19/2016 17:49 EST

(Hijack alert) Maybe I should take advantage and jump in here - I will be in Medellin Feb 7-11 and back again in 2 weeks after exploring Cafetero Zone. I had not heard of the Sabaneta area until now. I hope I can get the chance to explore there and that I can see if you Sabaneteros can meet up with me then. It seems like a place I might like.

I agree with everything everyone's said about Mayorca. It's what I always thought but it's nice to hear others confirm. I even wrote a Trip Advisor review on the Italian restaurant and after you showed me the name is Parmessano I now realize I wrote a review on it for the SantaFe mall. Lol.

livinginmedellin
  8/21/2016 15:22 EST

Technically it's called Mayorca Mega Plaza.

The Italian restaurant is Parmessano, which has decent Italian food. It's a chain with several other locations in Medellín in other malls like Santafé, La Strada and El Tesoro in El Poblado and Los Molinos in Belén.

Mayorca mall is in north Sabaneta but it's a short walk on a pedestrian bridge from the Itagüí metro station. The address is: Calle 51 Sur #4857, Sabaneta, Antioquia,

Itagüí is on the other side of the river from where Mayorca mall is located.
