My husband & I are discussing retirement options, and Jamaica has become high on our list. We live in Central KY, mid-way between Lexington & Cincinnati. We live in the country on a few acres. We would be looking for a country cottage above beach level, as you go into the mountains, but where roads are still good/fair. We would be buying our place. Does anyone know if our pets can come along? What in general is the feel in Jamaica about pets?

I would also ask what pets do you have ? There are a lot of stray cats and dogs, and it really depends on how and where you gonna maintain your animals: if they gonna be inside pets, i don't see no problems, if you intend to keep your dog out, then would be having a fence and how does your dog interact with cats and dogs ? Will he be chasing other animals or will he stay cool ?
As for the weather, they gonna be just fine, plenty of water and shade and nutrients will keep them happy.

Dear Jilda,
There are new guidelines in the ministry of Agriculture and cats and dogs are now allowed to enter Jamaica (they were not even as of Sept 2017):
Please, see below: http://www.moa.gov.jm/VetServices/import_dogs_cats.php
However, there seem to be a change:
http://www.jhcuk.org/visitors/pets
ELIGIBILITY ? Dogs and Cats o can only be directly imported into Jamaica from countries listed in Category 1 of Regulation 10; o must not be under quarantine restrictions at the time of export to Jamaica; o must not be pregnant nor be suckling young at the time of export.
I would still double check with JMoA though , there are phone numbers and contact info

I am aware of the climate difference. Our area of central KY is hot & humid but I've been to Jamaica and realize the difference is intense. However, my two dogs are short-haired and in the prime of their lives. I just see a slower life for them. Jane is a Beagle and Roscoe is a Mountain Cur. Beagles are very good with people and animals in general, and Curs are bred for loving their families. They would be kept in our area, not allowed to run loose. They are excellent citizens here and it is my firm belief they would be great ambassadors.

Not all cultures feel the same about non-producing animals. I did not mean to offend.

The question really isn't can you bring the pets. As Rick said, certainly it appears you can. The question is will your pets be comfortable in a tropical climate . That's the real question.

Really now... Jamaicans have pets. We also have vet clinics, all the stores sell pet food... we even have hot & cold running water, cable tv and Internet. and to answer your original question: http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/jamaica.cfm
