crime in Negril Jamaica

I just came back from Negril Jamaica. When I was there two people were shot dead on the street on Norman Manley Blvd. (main street for tourist traffic) across from many hotels and tourist resturants.

When I read the news, I found out the 8 killings had taken place in Westmoreland between mid January 2019 and February 2019.

These seem to be targeted killings but at this point innocent people can get hurt. If this violence is not cleaned up in Jamaica, now in a main tourist spot. I do not think this is a safe place to vacation. I have been coming to Jamaica, Negril for 25 years. I have heard about crime in this country but it has been well known that the tourist areas get extra attention because of the impact on the economy.

These brazen acts show me that something has broken down.

I lived in Jamaica in the 1990's for 10 years - ran a factory in the Free Zones. I had about 100 people working for me. I loved it - but I was very sensible about going around - I wore no jewelry, drove an older car, and didn't attract attention (I am white). I tried to blend in as much as possible, but I didn't go "native". What Iriestar is saying is not all wrong. You do have to be sensible and take precautions. However, there is no comparison in any way to events in the USA. We are a country of 320 million people, we have allowed gangs from Central america to infiltrate our country through our southern border. But if you go to the UN statistics, Jamaica is right up there on a per capita basis with some of the most violent countries in the world. It has always been this way in Jamaica, and I fear it will stay that way. The GOJ is utterly unable to deal with it. It's a shame because it's a beautiful country with a lot to offer.

Awareness is the key NOT being scared. Ignorance is not bliss

Then stay scared and stay home.

Crime happens everywhere in this world.

Lousy excuse. This is unusual in the tourist spot in Jamaica. I understand the government and tourist board does not want to advertise this. People are not going to Chicago for a sunny vacation. and I am talking about killings right on the main downtown street. Please forum people stop making these excuses to hide the facts. I just came back. No tourist wants to come to a place that has the stats of Chicago ghettos. Listen. I am talking about the main streets in the tourist section of Negril. Please read carefully or google...this is not an everyday occurrence. Don't try to brush this activitiy off. This has nothing to do with being sensible. One person was shot in broad daylight next to a tourist restaurant! You cannot be sensible...unless this is cleaned up or you don't go.

Crime happens everywhere, not just Jamaica.

How many killings took place in Chicago on that day?

As long you’re not doing something you shouldn’t be doing , you’ll be fine. Keep your nose clean and your mouth shut. Too many expats come here and are very loud and make themselves targets. Returning residents do the same.

Crime is is crime and you just be sensible
