I am a 49 year old Canadian looking to relocate to a different climate, for better quality of life and more reasonable cost of living. I am a self employed movement and manual therapist and I also teach yoga and do personal training. I am looking for an area that I can be outdoors more than 6 months of the year. I would love to be able to set up my practise and work either on my own or in a clinical setting.

Hello ExpatExchange!
My Husband and I are live in New Jersey and considering a move to Europe. First, we would like to visit Portugal and scout the Algarve Region. We are planning retirement, selling our home and visit few Countries to see where we'll be able to fit best. We are looking for warm, economical places in Europe, nothing big and where we can walk and not use a car. On my list is Portugal, France and Italy. mostly not too far from the coast. I have researched so many places that now I just feel overwhelmed. :) Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. We would like to start this year 2024 in the Fall. All the changes in Portugal seems very discouraging, Nevertheless, we would like to start there.
Love this website,
Sincerely,
Xiexie

I am going to turn 62 this year and am dreaming about retiring to another country either short or long-term. I will have my monthly SS and a small income from my bookkeeping business. Reliable internet will be a requirement as I need to keep my customers happy. I don't really know anything else to say. Maybe more will come over time.

I am 60 years old and recently retired. Several things are making me consider a move abroad. Number one is Donnie Trump and the Republican party. I feel that they are going to turn the US into a dictatorship. Even if not, I do not want to live in a country that would elect Trump again.
Second is the cost of living and healthcare system in the US. Cost of living I can actually afford, but if I can get out of the US AND live cheaper, great. I also believe the US healthcare system is too expensive and the quality is OK, but that is because I have enough money. I would rather live somewhere that has good quality healthcare.
Finally, I would like to live near a beach somewhere, Portugal looks like it has some nice beaches. I am open to other countries as well.

My partner and I are in our 60’s, healthy and active. I am a retired nurse and he still works in housing construction. We plan on moving to the Algarve or the Silver Coast within the next 3 years. We have a cat who is obnoxious, lol! We haven’t decided if we are going to import our 2018 Subaru or not as we hear that the cost of cars is high.

I'm 62 yo and still working at a job I can do virtually in the US. Ultimately, I would love to move to Portugal, perhaps work a few more years there, then retire in Portugal.

My wife Carol and myself know Portugal fairly well and are looking to retire there in 2027. Although this looks a long time away we know we need to plan ahead and are keen to find out as much as possible on making the transition smoothly and efficiently. We have looked at several locations including Obidos, Nadadouro and Alcobaca on the Silver Coast in Leiria to Barcelos and Viano do Castelo in the North.
We would welcome and be grateful for any information from those expats who have already made the move about both making the transition happen, but also your experiences of making your life in Portugal. We are already learning the language and have a great deal of respect for Portuguese culture and society, which is a major driver in choosing Portugal.
Kind regards Jonathan Begg

Hi My wife and I are doing up a house in Olhao and we are planning to spend as much time there as possible. Neither of us speak Portuguese (yet) so we are finding it sometimes difficult to navigate the online suppliers for bathrooms etc to do up the house. We also are very confused about the import duties from UK and so would love some expat advice on bringing over our own items.

I'm John. I'm 67 YO, born in 1956. Born in Michigan, grew up near Chicago, and live, now, near Cincinnati, Ohio
My wife, Jane, a Wisconsin girl, and I would like to spend our EOL somewhere more beautiful, less stressful, less expensive, and more soothing to the soul. Portugal has been recommended to us, so we are beginning to explore.
We need to learn from others, as well as make a few visits to check things out ourselves.
I speak Spanish, but not Portuguese, so that's one hurdle I know we'll have to jump.

My wife and I have visited several countries in Europe and look to relocate in Portugal from the US in the next 14-18 months. Our search is currently limited to the Algarve and Lisbon and surrounding cities with a focus on "walking" cities. This is a very exciting time for both of us and we look forward to any suggestions from the Expat Exchange.

We are a couple looking to adopt a quieter, less frantic lifestyle. I work remotely and my husband is newly retired. We are avid travelers, foodies, and love immersing ourselves in all life has to offer. We’re looking to spend a month in Portugal in 2025 and explore our options for long term living. We are looking forward to learning from the collective wisdom of this group.

Good day Retiree2024; we are Canadians and we just got our D7 visa on February 22nd and are now in Portugal (Algarve) and I can admit it's a very good way to start the year. In 2033, we visited about 15 different villages/cities including Lisbon, Porto, Cascais, etc. We love all of them with their own charm and we decided to buy in the Algarve. Visiting Lisbon, Porto, etc and Europe will be a few hours away by train or plane rather than a night flight from Canada with a 6+/- hour time zone. We also thought of visiting as snowbirds but we wanted to spend more than 3 months in a row so we went for the D7 visa (passive income). Took 40 days to get our visa, it was submitted on December 28th 2023 and we got it January 5th 2024. Good luck in your choice and adventure...
