Long term visa

New Topic Oldest First

I am now living in Romania. My wife is Romanian, went to officials to ask about long term visa, was told why bother they won't look for you.????? I will need a Romanian drivers license. Internet says I need to give up my Canadian permit, and have a long term visa. I do not want to lose my Canadian permit as I will be going back to Canada every now and then. If I get a long term residency card will I have to pay into Romanian health ins on top of my private ins? Very confused, no one seems to know anything, keep getting sent from one office to another one and at end of day still have not accomplished anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I;m in a similar situation. But to get a new driving licence in Romania is another challenge.... you need to know the language, to pass an exam, other papers more bureaucracy...

Hello guys.

The first topic, " Slipping money to someone" that can backfire really really nasty and i certainly advise you to NOT do anything like that, even as it seems obvious that it "might" work, it's not the best choice in a European country.

You don't need anyone to vow for you, if you are married to a Romanian, if you can show that you have a Canadian insurance which is valid in EU countries, and if you have a proof of wealth / income you are completely safe and legal to become a citizen on a EU country.

Now the drivers licence part: i Agree that you can "cheat" there.
And yeah the most easy way might be to take a Romanian licence.
since you live here you use the Romanian one more than your Canadian one.
You can apply for a IDP "International Driving Document." if you want to visit Canada.

If you are a visitor (tourist) in Canada, you can use your IDP for 90 days. if you wish to stay longer you can contact the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) and ask for an extension of your IDP.
Have a look here: https://www.caa.ca/idp/

I hope this helps!!

As for the Drivers License I would say one of two things.
1) Don't admit you have a Canadian License and get the Romanian one independently, or:
2) Use the Romanian one on your return visits, or:
3) Get a replacement on your next visit back.

In my conversations with ex-pats who seek to follow the proper procedures in many things in Romania and who get the run-around I find a fairly common conclusion.
Why is it so difficult for us? We want to follow the rules. Most Romanian bureaucrats don't have a clue as to what the rules are and few seem to want to learn them.
In the past their way of doing things was "Do what you want and if you run afoul of the law slip the cop/bureaucrat some money."
That's changing slowly, but it leaves rule-followers in limbo.

To Jacuro: As I read your answer it should be fairly easy.

1. Married to a Romanian
2. Proof of residency
3. Proof of financial resources
4. Proof of acceptable insurance

My question to you is the likelihood that a long=term visa is achievable with 2, 3, and 4 covered, but not #1.
My substitute for #1 would be letters of reference from prominent local citizens vowing for my character and desirability as a resident.

Hi there.
I'm sorry to hear that you have so many issues.
Before I can 100% answer you I need more information.

You say "my wife" are you married with a Romanian, does she live here, own a property or rent.
If you are married you should start with making sure that you have a paper saying that you own a property, are renting with her.
This paper has nothing to do with your residence here and can be obtained easily by the landlord or if you own by going to a notary.
Secondly for a residence you need proof of wealth or proof that you have an income. Also do you need to proof that you have a paid insurance from where you are from. All these papers can be validated by a notary.
After that you can obtain a residence.
Now your drivers licence. This part is more difficult. You're not European so your licence is only valid for a 3 month duration after that you need to travel abroad and come back for it to be valid.
Obtaining a European, say Romanian licence you need to or: do the test again and get one here which u can use abroad for 3 month and then the same story with traveling abroad.

If u need more info I'm happy to call you just message me.

Regards J
