Hi, I'm from Dublin, Ireland, and I will be retiring within the next 18 months or so. I have always liked the idea of retiring abroad in a place that is close to the sea and where the weather is a lot better than it is in Ireland, especially in winter time, as I find that the damp climate here leads to painful and stiff joints. While I like the sun (as it cheers me up no end), I don't enjoy it too much if it is very hot, which is why I was thinking that a place near the coast would be more suitable (I have heard that Altea in the Costa Blanca is a really nice place to live). Failing that, I would also consider the possibility of living a bit further inland, but preferably in a region that would be quite a good bit above sea level, as this should also be cooler than living in the lowland regions during hot summers. I have heard that Granada and surrounding areas is also a very nice place to live and the temperatures there appear to be around 10 degrees lower than most other low lying areas during the summer. I am not so sure that I would like to live in a city, as they can be a bit impersonal, but I don't think I would enjoy living in a very small quite village where there would be a lack of amenities and maybe not many opportunities to meet and mingle with other people and make new friends. So a smallish to medium sized town would probably be ideal. I intend to travel to Spain during the Summer in 2024 to visit some different areas and get a feel for the place. I should also be well on my way to being able to speak some Spanish by then (thank you Duolingo!). I think the first word I learned in Spanish was the word for beer ha ha ha (Dos cervezas por favor!). I would appreciate any suggestions that anyone might have with regard to places I might visit this coming Summer.

Saludos! I am a retired teacher/linguist living in New Jersey who would like to spend 3-5 years in Spain on the non lucrative visa. However, I won't be available to leave until next Spring (2025). (After I receive social security later this year) I have already reviewed the many requirements for this visa. My sole interest in living in Spain is to perfect my knowledge of Spanish. I'm not a bit interested in the beaches or the bar scene.

Hi! I'm a Swiss national and am considering a permanent move to Spain upon my retirement in +/- 3 years. Whereas I have decided on Spain for my future home, I'm still a bit undecided on the final destination - either in the Santander area (moving south in winter time) or in the Costa Tropical Area (potentially moving north during summer time). Any experience sharing and suggestions are highly welcome.

I am a half-Spanish half-American US citizen who lived in Spain for a combined 13 years during my childhood and adolescence (between the mainland and Canary Islands). I am nearing retirement (likely 2025) and very interested in moving to Spain after retirement, at least part-time.

I am retiring soon from my job as a nurse educator. I spent the summer before last in Spain and just fell in love. I love the history, the beaches, the architecture and the food! I can have fun doing most anything, just wandering the streets looking at the shops and bars and stopping for a drink or tapas is great entertainment for me. I am fluent in Spanish having been raised on the border with Mexico and having lived in Chile in the 1970s.

I would like to rent a studio in Malaga with a view to a permanent move. The rental would be for a minimum of six months but most likely a year. I am recently retired and am a keen golfer.I have been to the Costa Del Sol dozens of times and have always liked Malaga. Need advice on what area to rent in and connect with expats from The U.K. and Ireland.

I am Australian living in Australia but over the past 20 years my husband and l have travelled extensively throughout Europe and we have fallen in love with Spain and Portugal. We hope to move there permanently with in the next 5-10 years with the hope that we can use Spain as a base to continue our travels through Europe. We currently have 3 Labrador dogs but sadly assume we will be bring only 1 or 2 by that time. We thought an over 55’s village (individual home) living would suit best as we could use this as a base while travelling. And it’s also a great way to make friends since we don’t know of anyone in Spain. Looking forward to the next chapter in our lives. Would love people’s thoughts and suggestions on our plans.

I'll be interested in how your scouting trip turns out. We are always looking into housing possibilities in other countries. Spain is appealing, and so is Ecuador. Hard to decide which offers the best overall options for housing, cost of living, medical care and safety.

Retired and looking forward to a slower pace of life overseas. Have studied Spanish for about 10 years. Not fluent but can get by in simple conversations. Hoping to find a city of less than 800,000 with a nice central district. Would like to be able to walk everywhere and want to be close to restaurants and shops. As a same-sex couple, my husband and I hope to feel comfortable and accepted in our new home.
