older and tired of US I have dreamed of moving to Panama or Niccaragua I have decent monthly cash flow but am concerned about the depth of financial resources needed. What is estimated cost from ground zero to a resident visa? Does NI have a program similar to Panama's "pensionado"? What makes NI a better choice than Panama? Any info would be apprieciated

While you were busy dreaming did you ever think of doing a search of this and other sites where your questions have been discussed to death?
On the positive side, have you considered Portugal?

EXcellent advice from John Chip. You need to spend some time >>>> where ever <<<<<
....
Lots of little things, some people let them roll off their back,, others are made very unhappy.
..... Good luck,, 3 months,, good, 6 months better, various areas and living opportunities are vastly different.
......
Beach, mountains,, lots of close neighbors,, need Gringo companionship ??? Big town,, little town,, Entertainment ?
......,,,
Good luck !!!

Very well said, John Chip. Covers about all that will keep you out of big foreseen trouble.
Only thing to add is Panama will be more expensive than Nicaragua. If you compare apples to apples.
You might find a three month visit to be enough. Of course the longer the better.

"Older and tired of US I have dreamed of moving to Panama or Nicaragua I have decent monthly cash flow but am concerned about the depth of financial resources needed." Dreams rarely come true. You must visit/vacation 6 months to a year in both to actually see the reality of being a foreigner in a foreign land. Companionship will be your biggest challenge. There is a set minimum to your finances to obtain residency in all countries. Count on doubling that amount to live comfortably. Older means health care issues will arise. You will need to have established a reliable local network/family to assure your needs can be met once you are becoming incapacitated. Older, single...don't burn your bridges for a 'dream/adventure of a lifetime' when that lifetime has mostly already gone by. Long vacations and travel will mostly do for most with an itch.

I think you going to have a lot more useful info about expats on facebook. Nicaragua's standard of living is a lot cheaper so you going to get a bigger bang for you money. Like many have suggested, I think it would be better if you try living here for a period of time 6-to 1 year before committing. Before taking the leap make sure the paperwork with the right signatures and apostilled is with you, Good luck
