Hi all, I live in Portugal but have a Caribbean soul. I've lived on several islands and am hoping to spend Dec-Feb on Barbados. Any information you can provide about what area would be best for a single retired woman would be greatly appreciated. I love the water so want to be near a beach, love to dance so would like to be near social things going on (understanding the current restrictions). Volunteering is important to me so I can be part of the community. My budget is limited so cost of housing is a factor. I so hope to make this work and get to know the island & meet new people soon!

Update on my Barbados plan: I have made it to the island, landed last night (Jan 4). There have been a few challenges along the way, but mostly with airlines, not with Barbados.
My experience at airport, Pirates Inn where I am staying for 6 days, and health officials is a resounding "Well done!" I have met with efficiency, professionalism, friendlines, and willingness to meet my needs at every turn. I was retested on arrival because an airline change made the test 1 day too long. They were fast, organized, reassuring, & even got our luggage (a few others had the same problem), and provided sandwiches while we waited.
Pirates Inn staff has been excellent as well. I so look forward to the next 2 months as I get to know the island & people better. I'll be staying at Cumbers after quarantine, in Oistins.
Volunteer gigs will hopefully begin soon.
If anyone on the forum is in the Oistins area, I'd love to get together.

Plans are solid at last (unless airlines pull the rug out again, as many of us have experienced in the last year). I will be living in the Oistins area Jan and Feb 2021, arriving Jan 4th. I have quarantine accommodations set and an apt for the rest of the time. I've signed up for the Caribbean Collaborative to find volunteer opportunities. I'd love to meet people and learn as much as I can about the island in my 2 short months. If anyone knows of social groups and/or volunteer opportunities give me a yell. Looking forward to an exciting new year!

If anyone knows of a reliable property manager who rents apts or even someone who might have a listing that is not on the typical search sites I would appreciate any leads. Coming for 3 months, sometimes people are happy to have a long term renter rather than the 1 or 2 week vacationers.

Looking forward to seeing you in Barbados. I imagine once we get there that accommodation will be more readily available. I hope so anyway

Thanks for the info. I will look in more detail at the area. I hope to be there Dec - Feb, though I'm not seeing many affordable options for accommodation for small 1 br furnished places so far. I may have to trim to 2 months for finances. I am searching out property manager companies and newspaper ad options, hoping someone will have a place available. Given the reduced travel, maybe someone will be happy to rent their cottage or apt to a poor retired person :-)

Hi, It was a long time ago that I lived there but from recollection Bridgetown is the business disgtrict and not really residential - but things could have changed.. When do you hope to move to Barbados? I'm sure you will love it.

Excellent. I'll look into that area. Is Bridgetown a good area to live or are other areas outside the city better? I hope to not need a car so will need to be near public transportation. Definitely keep in touch. I hope there will be some meetup type groups to get together with. Volunteering and dancing are my favorite ways to get acquainted with the community, so hope to find both.

I'm delighted to hear someone else going to Barbados. I hope to go in January and would love to meet other newbies. I lived there years ago and the south coast (around Oistins) was lovely and had less mosquitos that the west, Lets keep in touch.
