What do I need to know before moving to New Delhi?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to New Delhi, they said:

"Before moving to New Delhi, expats should be aware of the culture and climate of the city. It is important to research the local customs and etiquette, as well as the language, to ensure a smooth transition. Expats should also be aware of the cost of living in New Delhi, as it is higher than many other cities in India. Additionally, expats should be aware of the air pollution in New Delhi, which can be quite high at times. Finally, expats should be aware of the visa requirements for India, as they can vary depending on the country of origin," replied a member in New Delhi.

"Visit as much as possible. Check if there is a generator and what is connected to generator. For eg it is very important to have air conditioners connected to generator. Ideally, talk with people who have lived there. Is the water supply ok? Is it safe? What kind of neighbours? Any mold risk? Who is paying for the gate guards and what is the deal. Are there quarters for servants and maids?," commented one expat who made the move to New Delhi.
