What do I need to know before moving to Dhahran?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Dhahran, they said:

"Dhahran is a city in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Expats should be aware that the city is a closed military zone and that a special permit is required to enter. Expats should also be aware that the city is subject to the laws and customs of Saudi Arabia, which are based on Islamic law. Expats should also be aware that the city is a dry city, meaning that the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited. Additionally, expats should be aware that the city is very conservative and that modest dress is expected in public. Finally, expats should be aware that the city is home to a large expat community, making it a great place to meet people from all over the world," commented one expat who made the move to Dhahran.

"Keep an open mind. Things are much different here. Somethings are better, example: my kids can play outside safely all the times. And, somethings are worse, not being able to drive limits when and how I can do my shopping, etc," remarked one expat in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
