What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Beijing?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Beijing about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"1. Research local hospitals and their maternity wards to find the one that fits your needs best. 2. Talk to your employer about what kind of maternity/paternity benefits they offer for expat employees. 3. Make sure you have a good support system in place with your friends or family that can provide help and assistance before and after your baby is born. 4. Talk to other expat parents in Beijing to get first-hand advice on the best places for shopping for baby products and learn about other useful vendors. 5. Expand your network of contacts in Beijing and make connections with parents or families with young children who could provide good company and support during your pregnancy. 6. Consider signing up for prenatal classes in Beijing, so you can learn more about the birth and health care system in China and get tips and advice from a professional. 7. It is always a good idea to purchase health insurance before your baby arrives. Make sure that you understand the coverage and limitations of your health insurance plan. 8. Make an appointment to register your baby's birth with the local police station as soon as possible after their birth. 9. Prepare yourself to navigate the Chinese bureaucracy, as you will need to get a birth certificate and documents for any medical procedures the baby may need," commented one expat who made the move to Beijing, China, China.
